Speed 650 Prairie?
I have a 2002 Prairie 650 with a HMF exhaust, clutch kit, cdi box, jet kit, and a K+N airfilter. I'm running stock rims and tires and doing 63 mph on flat ground. Should I be going faster than this, or is this normal? I bought it the way it is so I never tried it stock. How fast does a stock one go? How does the topend of this wheeler compare with a 660 Grizzly, 600, 700 Sportsman?

So far my best has been 72 by the speedo but im working on that. There was a good range in stock 650s anywhere from 57-62 reported (i dont remember mine). Your altitude will make a pretty big Difference also. As far as the others you mentioned you will probably be faster but the others "Especially the grizzly" will say on the speedo they are going faster. Alot of people call yamaha speedos "dreamos" because they are very generous in the readings. A friends said he was going 71 and I passed him pretty quick at 64. There are several ways to improve top speed though.

A few of the best ways to get more top speed, Is machine the clutch so the belt can ride higher on the sheaves, run stock wheels and tires (very light), bigger cams, let some air into the air box (dual snorkle or holes in lid), make sure carbs are in sync, if still not enough do some headwork, and most important is the RIGHT jetting.
Prairiedog, looking at yours with the hmf exhaust the first thing I would say is you need more air intake, like a dg snorkle or the napa mod. Your exhaust is good to get rid of the air but the stock snorkle just dont let enough in. When you get enough air in to compliment the exhaust you will probably need to go bigger on the mains.

Paintballbanshee you need to check out the latest edition of dirt wheels. There is an article in there about Mike Penland and his company PBR. If you read it you will see a picture of someone on a 700 prairie and according to the article it has been radared at somewhere around 85 mpr. Before you come up with excuses I know it is a modified race atv BUT, you said NO 650. You talk about people exagerating but I think people really need to know what they are talking about before they open their mouths. This past weekend I raced a 450r about 200 yards on dirt that had about 2' of loose top then it was hard packed. Even though the 450r was piped and jetted I still beat him by 2 quad lengths and that's after he started to catch up. At 100 yards my buddy said I had him by about 4-5 lenghts. My whole point is I've had my prairie up to 69 on the speedo and I weigh a little over 300lbs. so don't under estimate what a wheeler will do just because it has racks on it.

Does it really surprise you that a banshee rider made a reply like that? He was offended by me saying the yamaha speedos are refered to as dreamos.
Paintball, that is common knowledge and nothing to be offended by. I own a 2005 yamaha gp1300r waverunner and love it but the speedo says it does 82. I WISH!! gps has a best of 71 on glass down stream and I weigh 170lbs. It will take about $3500 worth of work to get it to 82. Dont be so defensive or so quick to call people liars.
