Default New Machine/ break in

Took delivery on new 05 BF 650 today. I put one hour on it takin my kids around the neighborhood. I have set the throttle governer screw to 50% so I don't get any bright ideas. I'm excited I havent been in the dirt in 16 years, since I sold the 83 xr 500 and bought into street riding. Anyway I noticed a backfire, more of a small hicup really when the trottle closes and the machine slows to idle as the compresion brake kicks in. is this a non issue? seating rings and such. I'm in Salt Lake at roughly 4200 ft. the tech at the dealership said that the machine was jetted for high altitude. any other things to keep in mind for the first ten and then fifty or so hours of opperation? Lay some wisdom on me.

In all seriousness you need to give your quad some gas. There are several good articles on the internet about breaking in a modern engine correctly. Go over to the Honda forum and read about the guy who babied his 300ex and now is complaining of blue smoke. The micro-cross hatching used in the cylinders does not give you much riding time to seat your rings. Let your bike warm up for 3-4 minutes. Ride it hard up and down good steep hill for 5 minutes. Deep sand is also good it allows the engine to work hard in the max torque range with out reaching red line. Shut the bike down and let it cool for 30 minutes. Repeat this cycle getting progresively longer run durations and you'll have a good engine.

Thanks for the info. I read up on the alternate break-in theory and it makes sense. next time I fire it up I'll give it kick in the ars.
