I just sold my 2000 Recon and am considering a Lakota or a 300EX for the suspension and sport ride. I ride state trails and with my Recon I was bounced off quite a bit. I have no upper arm strenth. Last time I was bumped off my husband traded me quads, (he has a 400EX) and he said my Recons suspension was the problem. So... is the Lakota as good a ride as most claim? Or would I need somthing a little better? Any input would be appreciated.

I bought a Lakota new in 1999, really enjoy it. The other quad i was looking at was a new warrior. Spent a few minutes looking at the 300 EX. The Lakota turned out to bea good machine so far, no break downs, ride it pretty hard. The main reason i boughr the lakota was because of the semi-automatic trans. When my wife and little boy ride with me they stop all the time. I did not want to have to deal with the manual clutch. I would always be pulling the clutch in and finding nuetral. I thought the 300 EX, Warrior, Lakota were my choices. Hop up parts are not as easy to find for the lakota, seems to be more choices for the other two. The lakota should be a far better machine than the recon. How it stands up to the others i don't really know. I raced a 300 ex one day a few times and outran him every time. My machine is a little modded though. I gave 4100 dollars for mine and then took the racks off. I did not percive the ex are warrior to be 800 dollars better. One last note on the lakota, i liked the fender and peg layout better than the 300 ex. As far as jumping i have jumpped it a few time when it was new,did fine but i am not evil keniviel.

I think you should look at the 250ex because it is way better than the recon since it has more power and suspension and looks a lot better than the old school 300ex. Only thing is that you may not be able to handle the power of the 250ex.

Lilgirlblue the only thing I can tell you is go to your dealer and try out each machine, its the only way your going to know what machine is right for you.

lilgirlblue,
we have a 2000 lakota and it is a nice machine. far superior sport ride than the recon. the lakota has pretty good suspension.

from what I have seen, the 2001 lakotas come with no racks, so if you want racks, you will have to buy them seperately. I would only get the front rack since the rear rack is small & almost useless.

the suggestion to consider a new 250EX is a good idea. the 250EX has the same drive line as the recon, so I am sure you will be happy with the engine. The suspension on the 250EX will surely be better than the recon. However, I have not seen racks available for the 250EX, so if you want racks, the 250EX may not be the machine for you.

if you don't want racks or an automatic clutch, then the 300EX is by far the superior machine.

good luck in whatever you decide.

The 2001 lakota has more of the mojave componets than last year.Every body has special needs ride the lakota you will love it,if you get tired easily go to a racer and have them help you with a steering damper, I flat track this makes the diifff on this 30 year old.If you dont like the ride on any machine you pick, buy a good set of shocks, for the front Iknow they are very $$$$ however drive a 76 cj-7 jeep go junp in a 2000. Get my point.manufactures dont put the expensive shocks on because most people dont need or are not willing to pay on a first time basis.mojave shocks are the same as far as bolt up.ride on mike

I have a 2001 Lakota Sport. i mostly ride rocky rooty trails. i have found that is os the perfect bike for me. The shocks are great and the handling on the trails is great. i do not ride crazy! But i can get a little aggrsive and is does well! Very happy with this purchase. I guess it depends on the type of riding you will be doing. do lots of research and ignore personal opinions!

RIDE SAFE!
