Default Question on riding in dust

I usually go riding by myself, never in groups. I have a ride coming up with five other quads and the trails are sandy and are going to be extremely dusty and I just know I will end up in the middle or the back as the father-n-law always rides in front for some reason. This is a dumb question, but how much does it tear up the quad riding in those dusty type conditions all day? Prior to going this Saturday I put in a new filter and just gobbed on the PJ-1 Super tacky foam filter oil. Not so it drips out, but a really thorough coating of the stuff.

Do these foam filters really catch stuff pretty well? I have always run a clean filter when I check it because of my solitary riding habits.

Thanks in advance guys for making this a great forum for Brute Force owners!

Default Question on riding in dust

Properly oiled, these filters do a good job of air cleaning.
If your worried about it, do this.
Take some white grease and smear it on the throttle bore. That way you will be able to tell how much dirt that got bye the filter. Kinda of like a poor mans tattle tale.
I will take dust over soupy mud anyday.

Default Question on riding in dust

Thanks for the tip. Usually, I have always taken the filter and unit off and then rubbed my fingers around the bore. The grease should work well too. I used to coat the top of the airbox with light grease sort of like a poor man's prefilter, but all it did was make a mess.

I use the same technique. I rub a real light coat of grease around the throttle bore and see if there is any dust on it when I next change my filter. I also grease the ends of my filter where it meets the plastic housing. This will help seal it against leaks on the ends.

I live in Phoenix and ride all over the dry and dusty southwest. I use Twin Air air filter oil and change my engine oil often. I keep good quality air filters on and so far all of my off road toys have held up real well.

I usually ride with 9 other quads on trail rides lasting from 200-500 miles. There are 5 quaders in my family and 4 in my Brother in Laws. Space out and you will enjoy the ride much more. You also might consider a dust mask if you are sensitive to dust.

The best way to beat the dust is stay out front:lol; But make shure your air filter is clean, watch your temp, dust will plug your rad just as fast as mud. might want to wash it out first.
