Default kfx400 recall, How do i tell if its been fixed?

rpxr400, Thanks for putting up those pics.... I have a diff thread that I put up. I took my KFX400 in 2 weeks ago for the recall. Ever sinse I have had it back it seems to be heating up way too fast... 15mins idling and the muffler is too hot to touch. There's no way that they could have changed the cover plate without cleaning it out right?? One more stupid question... those pics are of the cover plate??? I don't know nuffin bout this stuff....lol

Thanks,
Michael

Michael,

Those pics are of the actual clutch cover under the water inlet form the radiator, which is replaced (the clutch cover) under the recall. The original one was magnesium, which reacts with the antifreeze, causing scale buildup as well as corrision. The new part is aluminum.

The only things I can think of is they lost all the anti-freeze from the radiator and didn't refill it after the cover was replaced. However, I also understand that you shouldn't have to add anti-freeze to the radiator, because it's supposed to pull from the reservoir. Maybe it's not doing that?

The other possibility is maybe the water pump isn't working correctly (behind the clutch cover that was just replaced?) If the water pump impeller isn't rotating and moving the water, that will definitely cause it to overheat (and worse).
I could be binding up or something.

Thanks for the response... I'm gonna go home and check the radiator level... the resevoir is full. I did take the radiator cap off as soon as I noticed it was gettin hot and it wasn't full to the top. Only a pinky length low....lol
If I go home and the level is low then it must be the puump right? All I know is the fan is working... I don't know what to look for to see if the pump is workin.

Thanks Again,
Michael

Please tell me I'm just goin crazy.... I went home yesterday and checked the antifreeze level. It was full to the top of the radiator... I started it up and in less then 5 mins the exhaust pipe was red hot. Is that normal???

Thanks,
Michael

My brand new KFX 400 does exactly the same thing. Sometimes I just warm it up in the garage and the header is steaming hot after less than a minute. I guess it's quite normal being a larger engine than my 250cc Suzuki Ozark.

i brought up the issue with the dealer about the recall. he told me that if there was one, all of the kfx 400's in the dealership would have had them replaced. i really hope so. i don't want it back in the shop so early. i took mine out the first time today. it was fast and getting alot to get use to. but i had a great time. i couldn't stop riding it. but 1 hour and 15 minutes was the only time i had today.

No, that is not normal for the exhaust pipe to be red hot idling, that is a lean condition. Extremely lean, is the bike stock?

What does lean condition mean? And yes, my bike is stock. I'm gonna see if I can get a temp gage somewhere...

You should have it in about a month, so expect it soon.

They appartently got the vin# wrong on mine. First recall I got was for a 400 Mule. Only took about 2 weeks after they sent the right number in, but I think they may have expedited that.
