Default CDI replacement questions

I have a 2001 KLF 300 Bayou. Last year I put in a new CDI unit as the old one stopped working. Yesturday while out on a ride it burnt up. We shut it off but left the ignition switch in the on position and a couple of minutes we heard it sizzle and white smoke was pouring out from the cdi box. The four wheeler wasn't even running when this happened.
I had to tow the quad home and the cdi is toasted.
Question 1.... what causes it to burn up?
Question 2.... what needs to be replaced with the cdi? does the voltage regulator need to be done also?
Question 3.... How about the pick up....will that cause it to fry?
It was hot out and the quad was running good all day. could the fact that it being hot and the ignition in the on position cause this thing to fry? Thanks for all the help.
Rob
