Default $14 for an oil filter???

A couple weeks ago I paid $14 at the Kawasaki shop for a genuine Kawasaki oil filter for my P360 - only because I did not have anything else on hand and needed to change my oil in a hurry. I asked why the price had gone up (seems like they used to be half that price - and even that was a rip off IMHO) and the guy behind the counter said all their prices on oil-related items had gone up across the board.

Ok - I understand how fuel going up affects things . .but $14 for an oil filter is a rip off! This caused me to question just how much I enjoy this sport but then I got to thinking'. . .no, they aren't going to take this away from me. If supply and demand is truly to blame then I guess the situation is going to get worse because I refuse to pay $14 for an oil filter!

Where are you guys buying your oil filters and how much are you paying? Other tips in avoiding getting ripped off are welcome!

Default $14 for an oil filter???

check some online sites for slightly cheaper oil filters... in all honesty, they charge that much because they can. I had an ATV dealer tell me "having an ATV is a luxury so you have to pay extra for parts." Is it worth putting a $7 filter on that expensive engine and slowing the oil flow? How often do you change the oil? I do about once a year unless i swamp the machine-- so i don't mind the $14 filter charge. The bearing prices are what kills me-- $60 for a $25 bearing?

I use a $5 Purolator car oil filter on my Prairie and I'd wager its a lot better filter than the Kawasaki brand.

I been using the "TUSK" oil filters lately, ordered them out of Rockymountainatv @ $6 bucks each, better filter than a Fram or the Kawie filter, IMO.

Ahhhhhhh Yes.

The great, there are no other dealers withing 50 miles trick.
My first honda oil change for my ruibcon, over 50 bucks! Thats right almost 5 dollars a quart for oil and almost 15 bucks for filter and this was in 2002. And yes i changed the oil. now its online purchase only.
Saves me an 80 mile round trip to dealer, gets brought right to my door, I save 23 dollars over the whole purchase and save gas money and save my time.
All that shipped to my door for 7 bucks. Cant beat it.
And what scary is the online catalog place is making money too. so how the hell can the dealer charge that much?? I guess thats why there is dust on his oil bottles.

Most dealers here have a 150% mark-up and look at how many still buy at the Dealers for stuff like this.
Do some shopping on-line & you can save a bunch, well worth it.
One Dealer here is having a Super sale on ATV tires, he will even order them.
His Price is $250 for a set of the 25" Bighorns + tax + the cost for me to go & get them.
With a 170 mile round trip to get these tires are figured in, + my time, + the taxes added to the Tire sell, I end up only saving $22 by ordering the same tires thru Rockymountainatv @ $348, shipped right to my frt door. For the savings of $22, I'll just order on-line. If I shop around on-line I may even find a lower price as well.

Take a look at http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/RilterXRef.html for a cross listing of a lot of filters for quads an motorcycles.

That direct link is not working but it will take you to the home page. Look down the list on the left and find the filter cross reference. Lot's of other good stuff on this site as well.
