Default Gas/Oil in the recoil starter?

I went to pull start my ATV and the recoil starter was full of oily gas. Anybody know why? I pulled off the cover and quite a bit came out. Where do I go from here?
It is a 1999 Kawasaki Prairie 400 4X4.

Thanx, DD

You've got to give more info as what kind of quad you are talking about.

Two problems possibly.
1. Carb float valve is not sealing and raw fuel is somehow getting into the crankcase.
2. Gasket behind the recoil housing is leaking.
First I would drain engine oil and see if it's fuel diluted or not.

Ya, I would check the gasket inback of pullstart. Are you sure it's fuel? There's generally some oil/grease inside the pullstart and I have gotten water in a pullstart many times, and it could appear as oil/fuel but did not smell like gas.
