Is there actually a difference between a slip on/full system (exaust)?

Default Is there actually a difference between a slip on/full system (exaust)?

I've seen dozens and dozens of kits out there, and what is the difference between the slip ons vs full systems?

The head pipes that come with the kits all seem to be the exact same as the stock versions, just different colors. Is there a difference power wise. I'm guessing there might be, but so unnoticeable it wouldn't be worth it to buy the full kit.

The head pipe is quite a bit bigger than stock on a full aftermarket. As far as performance, anytime there's a turn in a pipe, bigger will flow better than a smaller pipe because there's more room in the pipe to turn. Especially when the turn is a 180 degree bend.

I'm no expert on this, but my general thoughts are that if you have a bone stock motor (no internal mods) or nearly stock, then the slip-on pipe is usually not a bad choice. However, if you have a big bore kit or other serious mods (like aftermarket cams/pistons/airbox mods) then the full system is a must have to take advantage of the extra flow that the motor can handle.

You are right. In general and with a motor that has not been tweaked to the max, the headpipe doesn't add much power over a slip on. There ARE gains to be had though, and the higher state of tune for the whole system accentuates those gains. The headers aren't really the same as oem either. Larger I.D. and thinner walls coupled with different bends alter the power curve as well as add a bit of power and lose some weight.

Thanks for the info. What about if you have jets and a filter? To me, it would still need only the slip-on?

Every headpipe I've ever seen doesn't seem to be any different (diameter size) when looking for my Mojave. I've never looked at any other parts for anything else.

I'm asking because I'm trying to find a kfx400.

It all comes down to how much you want to spend for your HP. The header on a 400 should net you 1-2 hp with a filter and properly jetted, otherwise stock motor. That couple HP is going to run you about $200.00 and usually comes at the expense of the stock heat shields. If you are just trail riding you will never miss it, but if you race at all the lack thereof may always nag at you. I have a header on my quad in large part because I may put a big bore kit on it someday.
