Default problem w/ low gear

Hello, folks, first posting here.
My machine___
'99 Prairie 300 4x4
My problem... When I put it into low drive the tranny wants to pop out into neutral. It's done this since I bought it several years ago with 1800mi. on it. The machine had been abused by some previous owner and rolled at one time bending the front bumper and bending the handlebar. It has other issues that I will address on later posts, but 4x4low is the one I need to deal with first since I'm going to be moving a 1,200lb trailer around and don't care to cook the belt.
So what's the problem, any ideas?

If things got bent in the rollover you may have to adjust the linkage on the tranny.

I agree, check the linkage adjustment, maybe the linkage rod is damage.

Sorry for the belated reply, but since I have to grease a sticking foot brake lever, I guess this is the time to check it out. April brought 3 feet of snow so I am behind on all my projects. Thanks for the feedback.
A question, though, check what to what? All I've done to this machine is oilchanges and plugs.

the other posters may be right about the linkage, my 650 prairie started doing the same shift from drive into neutral thing and i noticed that if i put forward pressure on the shift lever it did not do that. about 3 turns of the linkage adjustment nut solved the problem permanently. what a relief !
