kickstarter problems!!!

Anyone know about kickstart machines??? My '99 kawasaki mojave 250 is kickstart only...and today on the first kickstart it it sounded like something snapped or maybe felt like it...not really sure, all I know is that it went down like a ton of bricks...and now it has no resistance in it..I can move it up down freely with my hand, and ofcourse I cant get my mojave started now...anyone???

If it wasn't for bad luck you wouldn't have any! The SNAP could have been alot of things. well I just looked at the picture of your mechanism on a link from your last thread. It looks like it could have just been your spring. that would explain why you can push it freely that is if its still turning the motor over. If not then its 1 of acouple ov gears inside.

I thought it might be a spring as well. Well hopefully it is, that seems pretty simple enough to replace just have to wait a week for part to come in because no one locally carrys parts for mojave's anymore..until then I will pull start it and have some fun...thanks again for lookin out...really appreciated you guys...talk to you soon..

I guess if you look at the bright side of all these problems, you will know just about all there is to know about your atv when you get these kinks worked out, then you can be the one helping everyone else on these forums Seriously I hope that it is only that spring, and I am glad that you can just pull start it and play! I'll keep on watching how things turn out for you.

I have an update as of todays trail ride...
I stalled on the trail today, and as you know since my kickstarter broke I have to either push or pull start it for now.. I was not in the mood to do either on the trail, so I decided just for the heck of it to try the kickstarter and bam it worked and the engine cranked up..I drove it home and just to be sure I shut the vehicle down and tried to reuse the kickstart and nothing back to the same old loose up and down with no resistance...I was puzzled... Then I tried to push start it again down a slope in my yard and didnt get it going fast enough to start, so I put it back in nuetral and checked the kickstart arm and it had resistance so I jumped on Kicked started it for the second time...??...?? Does this perhaps help pinpoint what is going wrong...?? I was thinking that it might be the kick gear or ratchet??? But have no idea until I open it up....I am knew to this and was wondering if this makes sense or if anyone has experienced anything like this before?

Well your going to find out for sure when you open it up, but if I had to guess I would say that the spring is broke and its not letting the ratchet engage all the way. and when when you do get it to fire up in just kinda falls into place. Just a guess!
let us know what you find.

I didnt exactly figure it out, but I believe its the spring or gears worn down...because the quad still kickstarts every so often..it seems like it will always kickstart after its been driven for a few minutes or after I tried to push start it a coule times and fail at the push start bu it will kickstart..It seems like if I push it in gear for a good distance it lines up just right..not sure but all else is good..thanks for asking..once I tear it apart I will give you an update on what was exactly wrong...also maybe you could help..I was looking into a second 4 wheeler for my wife and I. Maybe a utility one (4x4) and has to be electric start, since my wife can't kickstart the mojave. There's 2 that Iam choosing between a '96 Yamaha wolverine 350 utility 4x4..he removed front drive shaft to make 2 wheel drive and bored it 50 over, or a 2007 Hi-bird 200cc basically new...?

Definately have her ride both and see what she is most comfortable on. I dont know anything about the Hi-bird, but I will look into it tomorrow. If she likes them both the same and they are both great deals, I would probably go with more CC's. Also, find out if that guy still has the driveshaft so you can turn it back into a 4x4 so your wife doesnt have to fly up hills to conquer them. Overall I still say see what she likes best as she is going to be the one riding it.
