4x switch does not seem to be working right. unsure of proper procedure for switching to 4x4. recently bought the quad and it might be operator error. bike is a 2002. Any suggestions.

Not sure if this will help, but on Kawi's you need to roll several feet before the 4wd will actually engage. Flip the switch, slowly drive the bike forward a few feet, then it will engage. Kind of annoying but thats how it works.

Don't blast the throttle while doing so, if the rear tires are spinning faster than the fronts while trying to engage 4wd then the front diff can potentially blow.

On my 2002 P650 you needed to be going less than 12 mph for the unit to switch. If you switched at a higher speed the display would not change until under 12 mph. Like Krait said, you need to be rolling to get to engage the 4x4. If you get stuck, it is hard to get into 4x4 mode as the front wheels have to rotate to engage.

The fronts do not need to be rolling to engage. That would mean that once you get stuck, you would stay stuck.

That is what I did not like about the P650 system. My fronts had to make one rotation before the 4x4 would engage, could be either forward or reverse. I just got to the point that before I went into anything that I thought that I would get stuck, I just switched into 4 x4 mode. Maybe the tires do not have to really move, but it seemed quicker when they did rotate a full circle.
