Default Newb needs help with Lakota

I am in the process of trading a Quadracer of mine for a 2001 Lakota. I have not actually seen the quad in person(have seen pictures looks clean)but was told that the valves were making noise. Unfortuneatly the owner started to take it apart so I haven't actually heard it run so I have no idea what it is. Has anyone experienced any noises from the valves on a Lakota. Would it be a matter of just adjusting the valves? Maybe a loose timing chain? Would bad valves or valve seats cause it to smoke? I only have around $600 wrapped up in the quadracer I'm trading so I think it's a pretty good deal but I am relatively new to 4 strokes so I'm kind of nervous. Is there anything I should be on the lookout look for? I am new to this site so any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Tight valves would make a top end tapping noise, and cause hard starting and stalling when coming to a stop.

It's got an automatic cam chain tensioner but that can be maxed out.

Yes, bad valve/seats can cause smoking.

Bent frame?
Bent suspension parts?
Crankcase leaking oil?
Worn out cam lobes?
Leak down test?

From the sound of it the valves are not to tight if anything they are to loose I do not think there was much done as far as maintenence.

Valve clearance becomes tighter due to wear. Stick in a feeler gauge and check it.

Any idea what the valves are supposed to be set at, I suppose I'll need to get a manual for it. I'm thinking that since he started to tear into it that I'll just go ahead and have the top end rebuilt anyways. Any idea how much that'll cost me? New rings and probably have the head rebuilt hopefully not to much $
