I will be buying my first quad soon, amongst other atvs i have been looking at the mojave (my friend has one and I do like it) and the honda 250ex. My question is which is a better buy, which is faster, and all around better bike, I appreciate any responses seeing as how they may effect my purchase. Thanks

We Recently purchased 2001 models of both Quads you asked about, personally I like the honda but the Mojave is Faster and has a clutch but is Kick Start versus Electric for the honda. The Maintenance will be more on the Mojave because of the chain versus shaft drive for the honda I think the Honda is much better made and the Mojave is no where near as nicely made and is no where near as fast as a 300EX as someone said we paid 4099 for the Mojave and 3699 for the 250EX
The EX has Excellent low End power but the mojave passes it about 3rd Gear..

The motors are the big differace between the two.
The motor of the Mojave is more hight tech.

Mojave 250ex

Liguid cooled Air cooled

Double overhead cam Single over head cam

4 valves 2 valves

249cc 229cc

34mm carb 22mm carb

The Mojave is know to go a least 55mph and 250ex is a Recon with a said 10% increase in power so I bet it will do about 50mph and take just a little longer in getting there.

I own Mojave's and they are great for all-around riding. It all depends on what exactly what you what to do. If you want something that goes fast, but is capable of doing some utility use,& like to use a clutch, then I would go for the Mojave. If you want something that is more of a beginner/utiliy sport quad, then get the 250EX. The 250EX would be better if you are new to riding quads or there are people(friends, wife, ect.) that are going to be riding it also. The Mojave is a step above the 250EX.

hey DanimalFL,
On what do you base the statement that a Mojave "is no where near as fast as a 300EX". I have Mojaves and ride with dozens of 300EXs, I have yet to see a stock 300 outrun a stock Mojo. And a modded Mojo will take an equally modded 300 as well. None of the 300exs i ride with can keep up with my modded mojave in the woods or in the open. Whether they are modded or not. The top speed stock for stock is almost the same with a 1 mph edge to the Mojo. I am not trying to bash honda or anything, I really like the 300ex, but it is simply not better than a mojave and there is no way in this world that a 250ex is better than a mojave. I can see where someone might choose a 250ex over a mojave if they want an auto with no chain and only plan to trail ride. But if someone wants a sport ride with more power, more suspension travel, faster, quicker, a manual clutch, better jumper, the abilty to change gear ratios because of chain drive, no hasstle from a battery, liquid cooled DOHC engine and so on, then the Mojave is the one.

I like Cobra JET pipes. I had a DG for a while. I didn't really like it. It didn't add much power and was loud(Cobra is louder). I would go with the White Bros. or save $100 and go with the Cobra and put the extra money toward a filter and jet kit.

I just bought a '01 Mojave and am looking at buying a 250EX for my wife. I would have never considered the 250EX for myself because it is not sporty enough. The main attraction of the 250EX for my wife is the auto clutch and relitively light weight. We considered a Lakota but it weighs 100lbs more than the 250EX. In your situation you need to decide on what is important, creature comforts versus performance. The 250EX will coddle you but if you want to wick it up then the Mojave is the way to go.

I'm surprised by the one comment about the build quality of the Kawasaki versus the Honda. I'm very pleased with the fit and finish of my Mojave. Hondas are great machines (I've owned three) and very well built but they are not particuarly exceptional. An example is the lack of a backup recoil starter on the 250EX. Cheap! The Lakota and Recon both come with this feature. When we buy the 250EX it will be something I will have to purchase as an extra. I'm guessing it will run about $100-$150.

Rockrider; I would give some thought to buying a Lakota over a 250 ex. I own a modded Lakota. I rode a 250ex the other day. My thoughts on the 250 ex- A stab of the gas in 1st gear brings on a wheelie, hit 2nd another wheelie. Hits the rev limiter real quick. Small jump has a tendency to come down nose first. Seemed to push in the corners. Handle bars vibrated excessively. No adjustment on the shocks. All that said it is a nice quad though. Seemed to peter out a 25mph. The Lakota has its share of faults but overall i belive that it is a better quad for 200 dollars more. The kawaski dealers around here will discout them which should make the price better than the 250ex.

If the Lakota didn't weigh so much that would be my 1st choice. I'm not sure why it is so heavy. My Mojave is 379lbs (now 372lbs) since I removed the stupid foot fence guards while the Lakota is around 450lbs. It must be the combination of electric start and battery that add a bunch of weight. I don't see any easy weight reduction for the Lakota unless the wheels are made of steel.
