need troubleshooting advice
#1
I have a '07 brute 650D 4X4. When I engage the 4x4 on the handlebar, nothing happens. Worked perfectly last time out. Had no time to troubleshoot. Where should I start to look? Thanks Monty

Thanks for the response. Nothing on the gauge. Nothing happens when switch is engaged to 4x4. Electrician at work figures a relay. Direct power to diff actuator makes sense. I'll have to try that, only problem is bike is at lake 2 hours away.Any fuses ever used in these circuits?

> Nothing happens mean either bad switch (not likely) or bad wiring or bad control box (more likely).
> There is no relay.
> There is a 10-amp fuse (red) under the seat and it should say EBC or engine brake next to it under the seat.

thanks, yeah I checked those fuses, nothing gone there. Another buddy says to go buy an actuator. I'd like to make sure that is the problem first before buying the part. Oh well, I bought an CD service manual on Ebay. That should help. I'm curious about something, and you sound like a good person to ask. The other weekend, I checked my oil and unfortunately cross-threaded the dipstick. Then I went through some water about 2 ft. high. This is when I discovered the 4x4 was not engaging as I was surprised that I didn't walk through this puddle. I drove the quad for about 10 minutes when it started running weird. This is when I noticed the dipstick. I felt like a dipstick! I got towed back and I changed the oil 3 times now. I still notice some milky residue. I will change the oil/filter again next time out. My question is, do you think I did some damage as I noticed some blue smoke when I revved her up last. Maybe I'll try a compression test.

Yes, compression test is recommended. You need to keep changing the oil until no more milk shake comes out of your engine. Mike shake=Oil + Water in your case. If rings/cylinders are worn out (because water washed down the cylinder wall and you kept running), you will burn oil and blue smoke would be seen. Another possible damage is the lower rod bearing. You should have your used engine oil check at an oil lab ($8 to $20 per test), and see if it contains any bearing material such as copper, chromium, tin, etc.

Well I checked the switch and there is continuity to the switch in 2 and 4 wheel drive. Like always when I switch off the key, I hear a hum for a few seconds from the actuator on the clutch cover. I assume this is working properly. Can't find any broken or loose connections anywhere. Never had time tonight to put direct power to the actuator. I guess I'm not sure where to put a hot wire.Though I took it apart and everything looked normal in there. Unplugged the control box you mentioned, got the test-light to go on in one terminal with key in off position and went on in another with the key on. Tried clicking 2/4 switch, nothing changed. I guess I'll try the direct power to the actuator tomorrow. A manual would be nice!
