Just bought 97 kawasaki prairie 400 4x4 good bike and knew it had a problem when i bought it. The problem is when you gas on it and it goes to shift from 1st to 2nd it grinds real bad and then shifts.... any ideas what may be going on??? My friend said he replaced the belt, and i have not tore into it yet just getting some ideas if there are any out there

 

I also forgot to mention on my post that the noise is coming from the rear on the left hand side if your sitting on the machine coming from around where the foot rest is

 

So, you know your quad has CVT belt driven automatic trans. What do you mean shifting from 1st to 2nd? Are you saying you are trying to shift from Lo to Hi gear while moving?
