Bayou idles, but won't rev
#1
A buddy has a mid 90's Kawi Bayou 300 that has been acting up. The bike will run fine for 25-30 minutes then, after slowing to an idle, won't rev back up. It's not missing, idles just fine, but it acts like a "limp-home" mode, only without enough juice to actually move the thing. There are times it sat for 5 minutes and would run fine again, other times it took 25 minutes. We've ripped the carb apart a few times, can't see anything wrong, but that doesn't mean we didn't overlook something. We've tried bouncing it around when it acts up, as we thought it was possibility something was sticking in carb. Wouldn't you think an electrical problem would be more consistent? I know that's not always the case, don't want to sound naive, just hopeful! If anyone has any thoughts, it would be appreciated!!

what type of carb is it? a CV carb or standard slide carb? If a CV, i would look at the diaphram on top that raises the slide with vacuum, if that gets a hole in it, it will idle fine, but with no vacuum lift, it will not raise the slide, and not rev. But running ok for a while then acting up points to something else, a hole would cause problems all the time, unless a vacuum port is partially plugged. See what type carb it has and let us know.

I had a similar problem with my Kawi KFX, it would start fine, run fine but after it warmed up and I would slow down or go to stop it would die, and then not want to start for 30-40 minutes. I thought I checked everything but after pulling my carb off (for the 3rd and last time) I noticed the choke was stuck about half way open, due to the cable being bound up and stretched out, but I honestly couldn't tell without pulling the cable completely out because the choke felt like it was functioning from the lever on the handlebars. I pulled the choke closed and just cut the cable off and junked the lever and my quad has ran great ever since. I bought a choke lever for a motorcycle and put in in there. If you pull your carb off again that could be something to check, It would make sense because it would be flooding your carb as you were riding so it would be a hard to restart.

Well,I now seem to have the same issue. I just got finished with pulling the brakes apart, and doing some maintenance. The last thing I did was play with the rear brake light switch, and BAMMM, I now have a quad that idles fine but does not rev, when I give it gas. I disconnected the rear brake switch, to see if problem still exist-it does. I then found that when I go to rev the machine, and put the brake on, the quad revs better with the brakes on, but still does not rev properly. Must be an electrical issue? If any one has a electrical schematic for this quad, I'd appreciate it in a pdf, or I'll have to break down and purchase a service manual.

I found that a wire issue was causing my won't rev problem. Wiring to the lighting system. I found a black plug under the seat,on the recoil side, and unpluged the black rectangular plug. Now I have good throttle response. I'm still waiting for a service manual so I can troublshoot wiring.
