Hi guys, I have a female friend that just bought a brand new Mojave and we have a bit of a problem. Is it common for the Mojave to be hard to start when cold? It is alot less tiring to push start it then to kick it over and start it that way. I have never owner one so I don't know if this could just be a problem during the break-in period. If that's the case then it should be alot easier when it has 20 hrs on it right? Any help with this would be greatful. Thanks again.

Not to worry, the Mojave engine is tight when brand new but will get easier to start once it is broken in. When I first got my Mojave in January it took several kicks to get started and took more effort to kick over than it does now. I adjusted my valves at 10hrs and found them to be too tight. My Mojave always starts 1-3 kicks, this even after being flipped upside down (I hate wrecking). Make sure you change your oil at 10 hrs like the owners manual recommends. Mine was pretty dirty and that was from riding the whole time in snow without any dust.

I just put mine on full choke and keep kicking until it fires up. Usually takes about 2-3 kicks to get her started. It starts so much easier than my 2 strokes do in cold weather.

I had the same problem with my "01" mojave. I searched for an electric start kit and found goki sells one. I have not purchased it yet because i found a technique that works, besides it costs $400 . I first set the choke to full, then i'll give her 1 or 2 primer kicks, (gentle pushes) then it starts on 1 kick but no more than 2. Call it superstition but it works.

Should start on first or second kick even when cold. I assume you read your manual and are starting it per the atated procedure? It shouldnt matter if its a man or women starting it, its a small engine and it should be easy to start. If you are having trouble take it back to the dealer because you said it was new so you should have a warranty.

I don't know if this will help you but I bought my mojave 2001 new, I had a hard time starting it and it seemed to run lean. I assumed the carb was ok and looked for a simple problem. The first place I looked was the clamp on the rubber manifold between the carb and the cylinder. I found it to be loose. I tightened it and since that it starts on the first kick every time.

MEANGREENMACHINE, Zippy,
It's good to see a couple of Missouri/Kansas riders in here! MeanGreen, have you ever ridden up at Tiffany Springs by the Airport! I rode there a couple of times last year but the parks and recreation dept. ran us off and threatend to give us tresspassing tickets. I hear they are supposed to open the area up this spring as an ATV/motoX park. Have you heard anything about this? Where do you normally ride? Not many places around anymore. We ride in the Missouri river bluffs just north of St. Joseph, hills, hills, and more hills. Great place to ride if your not scared of going vertical. Pretty fun technical tight woods trails too! Hope to see more local guys joining the board here!

TeamGreen, I am from kansas city. We have found a few different places to ride without being ticketed or fined in kansas. We ride at Lake perry. We have met up with guys that drove from independence out there and they said they ride out at deepwater. They liked perry better. I have never been to deep water but we are gonna go sometime in the future. We really want to plan a trip to chadwick. That place looks awesome. We also ride out in eudora along the river, topeka has some awesome trails, pomona lake has about 260 acres and a motocross track just for dirtbikes. Tuttle creek offroad area which is by manhattan kansas, that place is awesome, it's open to anything that can get through the trails. There are a lot of jeeps and landrovers that go out there, lot's of mud. Milford lake is another good place to ride, they have about 300 acres. We are traveling to waynoka, ok next month for rattlesnake roundup. That place is awesome. It's about a 5 1/2 hour drive though. We are always looking for new places to ride.

A bunch of my buddies and I will also be in Waynoka for the Rattlesnake roundup! Going to be alot of people there but I hear it wil be a blast regardless. We are leaving St. Joseph at about 5:30am on friday the 20th and should be at the hotel in Alva Oklahoma by around 1 or 2 in the PM. My riding buddies are hoping to have their little "project" done for the trip to run in the sand drags. The guys have an old Honda Odyssey that they have done some modidfications to. They extended the frame by 20" and installed a direct drive shaft to the rear wheels. The motor is a Yamaha 750 seca street bike engine that has been heavily modified. They have test driven it a couple of times on the roads outside of town and let me tell you the thing is nasty fast! They started it out with a set of Turf Buster tires like you find on a riding mower, well needless to say they spun those into pieces after just a couple of trips down the street. I can't wait to see this ugly thing in the sand! I'll be riding my 2000 Mojave. It won't be hard to spot me, since I'm 6'2" and about 285lbs. I look like an adult on a kids bicycle. Maybe I'll see you there.

Ahh , the Mojave legend lives on . I had a 88 Mojave [ tranny went a couple weeks ago , gave me many good years tho ] . Well , when I got my Mojave 5 yrs ago , used of course , she was a bit*h 2 start . Here in NEPA , in winter , in a unheated garage , my right shin still has marks . What I learned from chatting / reading was that , [1] use supreme gas , [2] use fuel stabilizer [ doesnt hurt ] & [3] turn the fuel switch off whenever she sits , even 4 short periods . Keeping the fuel off , only lets the gas in the carb so "stale" so 2 speak. Then next time , turn bac to "on" , give a kick , that 1st kick should use that "old" gas , give 2nd kick , NEW gas = should start . Worked wonders for me . Now that is on a used machine . 4 a new machine I wish u luck . 4 me I kept up on the oil changes & the other stuff of course , & w/ those 3 things , on a cold day , after sitting a week , started 2nd kick every time . Some of my electric start owners said "wow" 2 , on a cold day . [ BOY ,I MISS HER ] ....... c u .......[ o, I'm chick 2 , MoJaves r great ] .........=;~)
