I have a 2006 kfx 400 quad and it wont shift out of first gear. The shifter seams stuck, the shifter will slide in and out about an inch i dont no if this is normal or not. Please help me out

After checking it out in the daylight, the shift lever pulls out about a half inch, and if u pull it out and shift it will shift into gear, but it moves back in. I dont no anything about these just bought it from a buddy about a month ago,

 

Sounds like the shifter shaft may be broken. This shaft runs completely through the motor to the right side. To access it, you will need to remove the right engine case and the clutch basket.
