How to reset the belt switch on a 05 Brute 750
#1
Last time I was in WV my buddies 650 triped the belt switch. Several hours later and a borrowed phone and 5 guys standing around tring to remember what the guy on the phone said we got it reset.
I would like to print a copy of the procedure and keep it in my pack, so I have it. Mine is a 2005 750.
I know you need to plug in the test lead then stand on your right foot, say the ABC's backwards, and hold your breath. The rest a forgot.
I have the shop manual, but it only gives the test procedure using voltage testers and other tools I will not have in the woods.
Thanks for any information.

You are looking in the wrong pages of the manual. You don't need a voltage tester or any tools to reset it. The reset procedure is there in the meter section of the electrical chapter. More important thing is to find out why the belt tripped the switch if indeed it happened (yes, light can come on w/o physically tripping the switch which is a false alamr). If switch is actually tripped, it can be caused by too much belt deflection, belt/sheaves worn out, etc. The complete CVT system should be throughly checked out. Just resetting the belt light and doing nothing is like placing a piece of tape over the CHECK ENGINE light on your car's dash and not fixing the problem.

What happened was the belt light came on to say that it was time to check the belt at like 500 miles. I did not know any better so I unpluged the conector to see if it would reset, and it threw it into safe mode. Cost us about 3 hours of riding, so I do not want it to happen again.

OK, if the belt light came on STEADY, then actually it won't affect how the engine runs and you don't have to reset it right away.
If the belt light was FLASHING, the engine will run in limp-home mode and you need to put back the toggle switch inside the belt housing and do the reset procedure.
In both cases, you should inspect the CVT system (checking belt deflection, etc) before next riding. If you just reset it only, it's like placing a tape on "CHECK ENGINE" light on the dash of your car without really checking/fixing the problem.

) Then he told me about a popular mod of drilling out that damn toggle and remounting it on the top of the cvt housing (toggle side up- seal it up good) so It won't leave me stranded in the trails again- it's easy to do.
Having to remove a cvt clutch cover out in the trails and figure out a jumper to reset "limp home mode" was a half baked idea by some sleep deprived kawasaki engineer-
They should've at least put a "step 1,2,3..." sticker under the seat to inform the rider who may be 100 miles out on a trail (like I was)You'll know your cvt belt is going because it'll either start slipping, making noise or you'll smell it- like every other atv cvt belt.
