Every top end I've done, the o-ring(s) inset into the gaskets around the dowel pin(s). You'll probably want to go with the o-ring. However, you can spray your gasket with the copper stuff. I'm just going to start buying OEM gaskets. A lot of them have gotten away from using the o-rings and upgraded them.

Don't get them too oily when working either. Did you clean the surfaces well? Did you take a straight edge to the head to see if it's warped? Did you do a dry fit to see if a feeler gauge would fit?

Yeah, on partzilla for the 99 and 00 lakota, there aren't any o-rings shown for the jug or head. What year do you have?

I'm not sure if maybe the OEM gaskets where redone or not since the service manual was put out. I would think the parts diagram would at least show them in the exploded view, discontinued maybe, but still there. What brand of gaskets did you purchase for the rebuild?

Regardless, the o-ring should fit between the gasket edge and the dowel pin edge (recessed). If the o-ring is sitting flush on top of the gasket, then that is a no-go or if the o-ring is too thick. My honda 200s ('85) has different OEM gaskets than what the original service manual shows too.

Recently did a Bayou 300, which is prob similar. (Except doesn't the
Lakota have a 4-valve head?)
Looks to be the other way around.
