Yes, you can put a non-oring chain on it. I run all non-oring chains on all my stuff with zero problems.

This maybe a silly question, but why would you want to run a non-o-ring chain? I always under the impression that o-ring chains were superior.

I put a non o-ring chain on my old 250X and rode it for three years with no problems. The o-ring chains are nicer and don't need to be lubed as often but my non o-ring chain did not wear out or trash the sprockets during the time I owned it. I always had o-ring chains in the past and figured that they were the only way to go. But since my last experience I have come to doubt that o-ring chains are necessary for off-road riding. I think o-rings are better for muddy/wet conditions but if you don't experience that type of riding then the o-ring may not be worth the extra money. Oh, I only use steel sprockets. I tried the aluminum type and found that they didn't last as long as the plain jane steel sprockets.

Just for the cost. I wasn't happy with the stock chain from the start. It seemed to stretch fast and I am one of those people who actually preffer to do regular maintenance so lubing a chain doesn't bother me. I just really don't see the benefit of the o- ring for the money that's all.

The o rings are supposed to seal lube in and dirt and water out. While they don't always do a wonderful job at it they are probably the best choice if you ride in water and slushy wet mud. Other than that the non o ring should do just fine. And if it doesn't last as long you still have not lost anything because it is a good bit cheaper. just make sure you get one rated at or above the strength of the original.
Oh yea- rockriders right about the aluminum sprockets too. They suck big time.

2000MOJAVE, a non O-ring chain is going to run about $25-$30, I will make you a good deal; I recently lengthened the swingarm on my Mojave, and have no use for the brand new RK O-ring chain that I bought before I stretched the swingarm. I will give you the chain (still sealed in plastic and in the box) and a new 12 tooth front sprocket for $50.00. Take care, Bryan

It has also been shown on dyno tests that 0-ring chains take a little extra HP to turn, like maybe 1HP. After seeing my 1yr old 0-ring chain and how stiff it is I believe it. I debated this last year when I bought this chain and I think I will go with a non o-ring chain next time.
