When the solenoid clicks but the engine doesn't turn over, nine times out of ten it is worn starter motor brushes. Checking is dead easy. Put a 12v test lamp between the live lead from solenoid to starter, and earth. Switch on, press start button, if the lamp lights your starter needs removing and checking, if the solenoid clicks but the lamp doesn't light, the solenoid is faulty. On the old 300s etc, there were two starter solenoids, one was worked by the neutral gear switch, but it clicked when you turned the ignition on, not when you pressed the start button. Not sure if the 650 is the same.
