KLF220 Starter issue

merry, what elec starter would you recommend? I've picked up one on amazon, but i think it's a cheap wrap and/or brushes. I've watched a few videos related to a 220 starting, and none of them sound like the starter in this one. This is still slow to turn the motor, the videos are normally a rotation or two at a very fast speed. This starter isn't even close, single pull on recoil, 5-10 rotations on electric to start it.
I've been looking at the arrowhead starters, but not sure if they are any different than the after market i have now.

Thoughts?

I try to keep the original starter for as long as possible, fitting new brushes unless the com is burnt or a magnet come off. We get Arrowhead from out aftermarket supplier, but the quality is not as good, often the Arrowhead has a burnt com or loose magnet by the time it needs the first set of brushes.

Well original is gone so there's that.

Is there a starter you Reccomend if not the arrowhead?

No, our supplier used to sell original manufacturer starters, Mitsuba etc, but has gone over to the Arrowhead. You can't win with electrical stuff, I always said DZE was better for regulators and CDIs than the Chinese/Taiwanese stuff we get now, but after moaning about cheap Chinese rubbish when a 500 King Quad came back yesterday with a regulator that had failed within two weeks, I found the one I was taking off was marked DZE Argentina. The new regulator is Bronco, made in Taiwan, we will see how that one goes.

You can only test wires to and from it at the loom plug. Unplug it, yellow/red should be live with ignition on. Black/yellow is negative, an AC voltage should be produced between red and black/red when the engine is spun over on the starter, and an AC voltage between blue and brown with engine turning. When plugged in, it should produce high voltage spikes between green/white and black/yellow, check this at the coil when engine is turning.

People posting on here seem to be able to link to U-tube videos. Never tried it myself, and can't see what a video of your problem would show that we don't already know.

Merry,

took a break over the winter from the fix, now attempting to get her running.
So ... took a short vid, i think you need to see this vs me explaining.

timing is set, valves correct. But you see what it does.


I have all the covers off due to checking everything is in specs.
spark plug is in, and this is what it does, if the plug is removed, it will
turn over more quickly.

Your starter clutch or gears/chain/splines to it have gone. I think they have an epicyclic gearbox inside the starter, remove and check that is OK. To check the other parts, you will need the alternator case off.
