I've just purchased a '95 Lakota 300 from a friend and after a few days of riding, it has developed a rather odd shifting problem. Before, when shifting throughout the gears, it used to click up and was in neutral(clutch disengaged) and when the peg was let down, the gear selection was engaged and so was the clutch(my perspective of normal operation). Now, however, the shifter is really stiff and under high tension. Gear selection is tougher and the tension seems to be enough to sometimes drop the tranny down a gear after going up(N-Engage 1st-Throttle,Engage 2nd-Throttle,Pops back to first). I have driven many motorcyles and have not been hard on this one although it is the first ATV I've owned. I have ordered a 1995-1999 Lakota 300 manual and it is on the way, however I was hoping someone from this group could help me out. I'de love to get back to riding my new toy(rather than it sitting in the garage.)

Thanks,

I'm not sure about your machine but some have a type of spring on the shifter(internally), some have two.
Does it feel like a spring or does it feel like the tranny is in a bind, and does it grind.
Check and make sure it has good oil.

Well, I adjusted a little screw under the cover of the gearbox side and it seemed to loosen the shifter up alot, however it still not right. When you shift it's like it immediately goes into gear where it should go into neutral/clutch disengagement first. I've pulled with my hand very hard up and it just shifts at the highest point and stops. I'm stumped.
