A buddy and I were riding this weekend and his Praire 400 4X4 started flickering the lights and then the engine started cutting out. Eventually, it died completely while he was riding it. The power was completely out. He had no lights, speedometer, or starter. He was able to pull start it after that, it starts right up. When he accelertates after starting though it will surge, then cut out.. surge, and then cut out. Any ideas what might be wrong? Could it possibly be a voltage regulator, or the computer brain? Any help would be greatly appreciated, we have no idea what to look at for possible cause. Thanks in advance for your help.

You may also want to take the CDI box out and take it to the dealer and have them test it. Also have your buddy buy a clymer manual for it, it will tell him how to find and correct most problems w/o paying the dealer $50/hour just to look at it.

 

Thanks for the tips. He started investigating the wiring last night and found one of the fuse connectors had come apart. He plugged it back in and it runs fine now. The connector must have come apart on the trailer ride to the farm we hunt on.

I'll tell him about the manual. Where can you get them, at the dealer?
