If you are going less then 18 MPH it only takes a few seconds, however, the faster you are going the longer it seems to take. Kawasaki recommends that you be doing less then 18 mph before switching.

I noticed the same thing on mine. But once you start moving forward it changes. However, I read in the manual that it is not recommended to go from 2x4 to 4x4 on the fly.

Does this mean the manual is incorrect?

i belive its common sence as its probably not a good idea to engage all those gears together at speed. To me if you think about it mechanicly ther is allot going on there. I stop then engage the 4wd when it appears that i will need it as if you wait until you get stuck you might have to get mud in your boot.(the one on your foot not your bike).I also beileve in the manual as i think the fellows no a bit about our bikes.Take care

I think what they are trying to stop is engageing the front wheels while the back wheels are spinning when stuck. Just my opinion.

A factory rep told me that you could shift on the fly as long as you were under 18 mph.

you`re missing the point, it won`t change over at a dead stop for at least a min.

Hey Scoot - Sorry I think I got this thread a little side tracked with my comment. I notice the same thing on mine. Again, once you get rolling it changes but I do see your point. I think the 650 will light up the indicator when the machine is in fact in 4x4 mode. Other ATV's will light up the indicator once you engage the 4x4 switch/lever. Since most 4x4's don't engage right away, maybe Kawasaki has designed it so that it comes on when it actually gets engaged.

Last night I was at a dead stop and engaged the 4x4. It never did indicate I was in 4x4 until I started to move forward. You mentioned above that it took over a minute at a dead stop. Is this true? If so, there goes my theory!

I used to come to a complete stop before shifting in or out of 4 wheel drive until I read in the manual that it is safe. In fact it seems a whole lot smoother when im moving. I just let off the throttle so there is no strain on things.
You can in fact flick the switch at any speed but the computer wont let it shift until speed is under 20 kms.
The reason why it wont shift well when standing still is because there is a pin which has to be lined up with a hole and moving forward or backward will line things up.
Sitndux, I cant find where it says not to shift on the fly in my service manual?
