Good luck finding a black Maier smoothy hood. I called them a couple of weeks ago and they didn't have any in stock. They said they could make one, but it would be 3-4 weeks before they would be able to make it. They had one white hood in stock. I ended up making mine from sheet aluminum.

It's Dennis Kirk #30703. It's 2 1/4 at the mouth and 4" long. The carb is actually 2 1/8, but mine clamps on well and I do really like it. If you want to stick with K&N get Dennis Kirk #30514-it's angled 5 degrees, but you can turn it on the carb so the angle is anywhere you want.

Sorry I'm so late seeing this thread. It looks like you guys got it all covered. Just to add my thoughts though, the smoothie hood fits well and does not cause any overheating problems. Most of the air that goes to the radiator goes under the frt plastic. The "big black thing" is the rubber snorkle cover that is supposed to direct water around the intake. It can be trimmed or removed. My suggestion is to get rid of the whole mess and put a clamp on filter on the carb.(unless you ride in the deep creek challenge)

The color discussion is a matter of preference. I prefer a contrasting color for the hood as related to the other plastic. I put a blue smoothie on to match my blue seat cover. On the later Mos with the black seat covers, a black hood looks the best to me.

The graphics came directly from KLOTZ. They are made for a Honda 250r, but I did a little trimming and made them fit on the Lakota.
