Time for a cvt rebuild, advice needed
#1
I have right at 3500 miles on my 1999 400 4x4 prarie and the cvt is starting to sound like a diesel at idle.
The local shop suggested I replace the whole drive pulley assembly for $526.00!!!- There has to be a cheaper way for me to replace only the wear items.
Are the two tools required for removal of the assmbly- "drive pulley puller bolt" and the " drive pulley wrench" ?
(can these tools be used on a 650 if I can ever get one?)
I'm wondering were I can get the parts/tools on-line or from a wholesaler.
Are there any aftermarket parts or spring I should slip in there while I've got it apart?
The quad still runs great, I'm just scared to put it under much of a loud with all that clattering going on.
Any help in the matter is much appreciated.

goto www.erlandsonperformance.com to get as much as you can. The 300/400/650 all use the same puller.
Some people feel that you don't ever really have to take the primary off, just work on it on the crank. I can't say for sure but you may not need the puller.
Clattering is usually caused by the shoes, and they are not nearly as expensive as your dealer has quoted. If the sheaves have grooves, they may not be bad enough to worry about. You just have to cehck it yourself. Be careful not to pay for something you don't need. If you listen to the dealer without getting the real facts forst, they might mislead you into buying extra stuff or paying needless labor charges.
If you have enuff tools, you can do this all yourself. Go to my 650 website and read all the tech tips I have for the 650 cvt, then take your drive cover off and see if any of the 650 info can be helpful to you. My brother has a 400, but it has not needed work except for accident repairs. Any tech tips or photos you can send me to post for the 400 would be appreciated by many people.

Nyroc, your website was the first place I looked at for advice. If I could replace wear guides and rollers without pulling the primary, it would sure make this a lot easier.
The sheaves are definately grooved, but I don't care much about that. It seams as if the grooves make the engine rpm match a certain speed and dissallow it to raise and lower rpm smoothly. Preferred -no, worth the cost of replacement? I hope not.
Are the shoes your referring to in the driven pulley?

I put over 12000 kms on my old prairie 400 and it developed the "diesel" type knocking you are referring to as well.
There are some plastic bushings in the drive pully that are designed to wear out before anything else.
Parts cost about 10 bucks and labor depends on you dealer.
