The 2wd and 4wd works just like any other big quad out there. Push a button and it is in 4wd, push it again and it is in 2wd.

The yellow lever is the Prairie owners secret weapon. Pull it and it uses a series of clutch packs in the front diff to lock together making the front two tires one big pulling unit.

If you have ever seen a 4wd quad spinning, you always see one of the front tires spinning while the others just hangin' there. Pull the yellow lever on the 650 and watch out, because here you go!

Also see the True Front Lock thread for information on how a differential lock works.

the electronics on your 650 won't shift to 4x4 until you are going 1.8(?) to 12mph, I think. So don't be expecting it to shift every time when you are stuck in a hole stopped. Must turn tires slowly for a few seconds, since the electronics will try, wait, try again, wait etc.. Turning rear tires fast while stuck in a hole and trying to engage 4x4 can be very damaging.

Shifting while moving is not in the least bit damaging. You have to be 12mph or less to shift to 4x4 (or to 2x4).

Just in case anyone tries to tell you what true 4x4 is, The 650 and 360 (660 is too) are true 4x4. When they are locked, they are locked good.

The polaris is not true 4x4, since it has electromagnetic speed sensing hubs. That makes it all wheel drive, similar to a car in some ways. It may be good, but it is not true 4x4 because it may engage, may not. It allows some slippage. You can't ensure that it will enagage, like you can on a true 4x4. The polaris does not have a differential either, just the gears. In some ways it is an excellent idea. It is extemely smooth when going slow on rocks and stuff, but it has some fairly serious idiosyncracies that a lot of people don't like. Sometime it just plain doesn't engage. It yanks hard on the handlebars sometimes when the hubs disengage. The 4x4 system won't enage at high speeds (sux).

Glad I have my true 4x4.
