red spring?
The black spring goes in the secondary pulley. The red one goes in the primary. They are supposed to work together. I have had both in our 650 and I can tell you the red definately is better than the stock one. Only reason I dont have the red one in now is because the wife rides it and wont give herself time to get used to it.

I have the red spring, but have not put it in yet. Do I just remove the 8 bolts on the drive pulley to change it? Is there any need to remove the drive pulley assy? It appears to be a taper fit onto the crank.
If yo utake out the 8 bolts, is there any unusual preload on the spring to be careful of?
My casual efforts to break the lock were unsucessful. The book talks about a hook wrench (p/n 57001-1101) and bolt to remove the drive pulley. What is that? Is this simply a wheel puller?

The center bolt and the 8 smaller bolts all need to come off. There is no unusual preload on the drive spring and the entire assembly doesn't have to be pressed off. The Nyroc site has good hints if you don't have access to an impact wrench with which to remove the center bolt.

After removing the eight bolts and center bolt as Novakaw explained. Two of the eight ears where the eight bolts are have alignment pins. This will hold the outside of the pulley on once the bolts are removed. You have to carefully pry the pulley off. Also make note that the center bolts has left handed threads. You must turn it clockwise to remove the bolt.

I like the 650 because of the comfort of the ride and the ability to tackle mud. I like the Scrambler because it's ability to maneuver on tight trails, it jumps better, and it has been troublefree. Plus after all the mods I have done to my 650. The stock Scrambler is still faster than the 650 because of the 28" tires. I would keep the Scrambler if I didn't have to make room in the garage.
