Default Protect those Thumbs boys...

If you ride like me you've bruised your hands and thumbs before. Well, this last weekend I did it better than ever.

I broke my left thumb into 3 pieces.

http://home.wi.rr.com/rmblam/finger2.jpg

I had surgery yesterday to pin the pieces back together. On the 25th I get a permanent cast for 4 weeks, then it's off with conditional use. I get the pins removed then too.

I got lucky (maybe) and only had closed surgery where they place the pins through the skin. If that had not gone well, then it would have required cutting and screwing together the pieces. Time will tell the overall success. I have to expect arthritis in that joint eventually though.

Anyway, I recently installed a set of 589 M/T's that ride rough, even with 3lbs pressure. The firmness of the tires readily transfers that energy into the handlebars. When you grip the handlegrips you expose the 1st metatarsal bone end in your thumb to the switch/button cluster. If you clobber that part of your thumb hard enough then you can get a break (or breaks) like mine... That and a nice ATV and activity holiday.

Play hard and we have to be prepared for some consequences, but I'd readily break any two other fingers to get my thumb back.. This sucks.... I can't wipe my @ss the same (my wife refuses ;-), nor button my pants easily.... Simple things are now complicated.

No sympathy required, just sharing my experience. And I'm bored.

Have fun and ride safe....

I here where your coming from. I've been home now for 5 weeks due to my broken leg. Tibia is in pieces and my Fibula is broken in 2 spots. Tibia came threw the skin. In the hospital for 6 1/2 days and 2 surgeries. I now have a rod in my Tibia (shin bone) with 5 screws. Just started Phy therapy and hope to be walking with out crutches by Dec 1. Going on a cruise that I had booked back in Feb. Dr said I should be able to walk, but I still might need one crutch or a cain. Been dying to go riding, but don't want to take a chance. So you can say, I've been bored for awhile now. Hope things get healed right and take it easy.

Hey sorry bout your luck. Broke my right hand 3 times. Goin to the john just wasn't the same for a long time. If you wait ling enough everything will dry, turn to dust, and the wind will blow it away. Either that or have the wife pick up a new pressure washer. You need one for the quad anyway!

DirtyWhiteBoy,
I know how you feel. I broke my ankle, tib and fib last winter on my quad. Got it fixed with a plate and 10 screws. Sucker still hurts. I think I am going to be a Meteorologists because I know when the weather is going to change by the way my leg thumps!

lol@bing. Please, no garden hose enemas.... Although I may need one after all the morphine, demerol and vicodin I've had. Narcotics inhibit GI motility leading to constipation... oh joy. I didn't get nauseated from the anesthesia, but I reacted to the morphine (Histamine flushing and itching similar to an allergic reaction, which is common with morphine). Thus, I got a steroid (probably Solu-Medrol) and some benadryl injections. It was wild; my blood pressure dropped big time from my skin dilating from the histamine. Anyway, a common reaction to a steroid injection is a "heartburn" type reaction that stayed with me for the next day or so. I was downing the pepcid and antacids like crazy to get relief.

GE, that sucks bad. My inconveniences are petty compared to yours. We have a trip booked to Vegas on the 28th that should be interesting. I am going to ask for a water-tolerant cast so I can go swimming and not have a hassle when showering. I am going to have to break dress code at work also. I can't get my dress shirts over the cast and forget tying a tie. I'm thinking scrubs sound good now; which I was against during a previous dress code discussion. Either that or some polo shirts.

I was really bummed as I have had to cancel my fishing trips to Little Bay de Noc (UP Michigan) this fall. This is my favorite time of year to chase the big Walleye and I have many newcomers that are going to miss out now... I love taking people up there and watching them catch the biggest Walleye of their life.

Don't rush to ride or do stuff either. It's better to mend well the first time. We'll be back at it soon enough.... That is easier said than done though.

Good wishes and recovery...

You guys are hard core with the broken bones....

Thanks guys.

DWB,

I hope you are looking forward to the spring run! I also seriously hope you aren't intending to ditch the 589's 'cause then (injuries aside) we'd have to make you wear a skirt All kidding aside, I'm sorry to hear of the severity. I was hoping you just sprained it. I pretty much sprained my right wrist riding the SP (wanna talk about kicking tires) when the LH grip came off but that seems to be just about back to normal now.

Looking forward to spring!

BTW, I was serious when I suggested the home remedy: Soak it in cider! (change the c to s...)

Drop me a line and we'll go riding some time...

Hell yeah, I am going to be there next spring.... I had a blast riding with you guys; your pace was more my style.

This is just a temporary inconvenience.

I'll be keeping the 589's, but I am going to drop the pressure some more and use those in the slop. I think I'll switch to the Bearclaws for running and gunning.

I hit those buried rocks just right I guess. I knew I broke it when I heard the snap, but I was in denial as I'd bruised it there before (wishful thinking). It happened so fast. I kept pounding for a few miles until I couldn't squeeze the rear brake anymore. I figured I should slow down and check it out then.... heh.

Those last 40 miles riding 1 handed sucked; especially when I noticed my machine was overheating from all the caked on mud. I hope I didn't trash it. I don't have any smoke blowing from the exhaust that I've noticed, but it sounded different. We'll see after I check it out thoroughly. I was pretty spent at that point. I was glad when Mike showed up and towed my *** home.

I couldn't find my wife, so I stopped in at Ladysmith ER and got the good news Saturday night at about 11pm. I was debating going home, to Ladysmith, or to Ripon. So, I was back on the road at 12:30 and made it to near Portage at 2:30am. I had something to eat, crashed at about 4am, and back on the road at 9am. I was bummed that I had to leave in the first place. All the food I made for everyone was good. You guys missed out ;-) as I ate it the next day. Mike said they had a good time the rest of the weekend though.

I can't wait to do it again.....

Bob

Bob,

I think a LOT more people are suprised/disappointed in how their machine rides/handles after putting on "real" tires than will admit it. I've found the Devil/Gator combo works quite well on the Rincon. Good bite from the Gators, and the DD's stay planted well in the turns. I took off a pr of 25-10-12 Bear Claws from the rear in favor of the Gators.

I'd have been more comfortable up front I think. The middle kinda sucked as when we started out after a break, someone always seemed to have to hurry up to be in front of me, and then dick off. I rode last for a while, and that way I could back off and then make it back up.

I hope Cliff (big ape on my SP) wasn't too bad with his Kawasucki comments etc. He's pretty belligerant, but once you get to know him, he is a blast provided you can brush off his attitude. He's particularly funny when he gets off camber in a mud hole and won't let off until he rolls it!

Did you really get stuck trying to follow JJ's SP335? I didn't see JJ go through, but heard he did. That was going around the deep water hole that Ostie swamped in and I fell off while backing up. Hope someone got a pic with the SP wheels out of the water in the hole! That Vamp combo is KILLER for mud with bite/bottom!!!
