boring and other engine work questions??? please help if possible
#1
i was considering geting a new pipe and geting my mojave bored .020 over. will this really give me alot of power? will boring the cylinder greatly reduce the reliability of my machine? and what exactly is "head work" and is this a better decision than boring? also would a "port and polish" job give me good all-around power? i know these are alot of questions but i'm building up my machine over winter so i can race in four-stroke begginer class next season.

well, i'll try to answer your questions the best i can.
think of your engine as a big air pump sucking it in and spitting it out. the bigger the motor is, the more air it can suck in and spit out... that's why people increase their displacement... and port their heads.
boring the stock sleeve out is a waste of time if you're going for power (well, in theory)... you need to get a big-bore kit from a company like 4-stroke tech... they make a 330 kit for your bike and it's probably pretty cheap. there will be more of a strain on the bottom end but not a whole ton... i'd do it to mine.
headwork is a general term but basically entails mods such as porting/polishing/valve angle jobs/changing your valves/springs/retainers/ect...
PORTING IS TO BE LEFT TO THE PROS. everybody seems to think they can do it themselves with a dremel and 99% of people have no clue WTF they're doing. making power in the ports is a combination of many factors including flow, volume and velocity...
there are lots of things that you could do to help your mojave out. i don't think the forum is always the place to learn some things... that's why i'm recomending you to mickey dunlap. i'm sure he could make you a fire breathing 330 for a good price.

I have communicated with Mickey several times and I like his approach straight forward and to the point he can get the most out of the engine without haveing to spend thousands to do so. The only problem is he is in the States and I am in Canada and that's tough bringing parts, peices across the border. They say it is free trade untill you try bring it across the border then what ever it costs in the States it is twice as much here before I get my hands on it. I must think twice before I order from the States unless I can get a dealer here to order it for me and then I get the extra 10% added on plus exchange rate, States taxes, shipping charges and the all important brokerage fee. Oh I forgot the GST TAX fortuneate for me living in Alberta I don't have to worry about the sales tax. I guess the government has to have their fun too.

tell me about it, alltoys! by the time i got my FMF shorty across the border and on my bike it cost me around 150 bucks... i should have just spent a little more and got it from a local dealer... oh well, at least i got it... for a while i was worried that my money order went MIA...

Quadracer,
Where abouts in Manitoba do you reside, I was at The Pas last year for some fishing actually some of the best Walleye fishing I have ever had and right in the town. I travelled a little north from there to a few lakes and again I had some great trout fishing this time, the best thing about it was I didn't have to travel for hours to find any fish. For me The Pas is around a 14 hour drive how far are you from there PM me It seems I have more contacts far away from home than close to Edmonton. My heart is with my family, my mind is at work, my sole is with the bush and my pashion is quading. Its funny I worked in the oil patch for years and hated mud with a huge distaste it seemed as though I was in it every day during the summer and freezing my butt in the winter. Now with the quad I can't waite to get muddy go figure!!!! Talk to you again.
Slojave I now this doesn't do much for reworking the motor but again try Mickey Dunlap you will be very happy with his work.

alltoys, you've got a PM.
Slojave, when i earlier said that there would be a strain on the bottom end with a big bore kit I don't think i phrased that right...
there should be a very SLIGHT increase of strain on the bottom end compared to stock. I definitely endorse a big bore kit for your bike... in fact I'm hunting down a 300 kit for my RMLT at the moment. I've got the motor out of the quad and i'm just waiting to get it out to Roy Borton for some... "extensive work"
