Difficult to get 650 to shift sometimes

Can any of you tell me why sometimes I have to rock back and forth to get my shift lever to move into a gear? I doesn't happen all of the time, but when I does, I feel like I am rocking and forcing the lever into place. It isn't always the same gear either.
I have heard mention that there is a shifter adjustment that can be done, but when I did a search for this, there were no hits.

PCpacker, some people are able to get just a little teeny bit of pressure on the belt going by turning the idle up. This makes the gears clack just a little while shifting, but the shifter never hangs up like that.
Also, if the belt is adjusted tighter, there may be enough belt pressure to make smoother shifting whether the the idle is turned up or not.
You should not adjust the shifter for this. Usually the shifter needs adjusting if it does not properly engage low range, which generally causes a ratcheting sound as the gears slip when slowing down in low range.
