Default 650 problem -- maybe?????

My 650 has the pro-circuit t-4 pipe (full system). This is the only modification to the motor so far. The pipe has been on since day 1 when it was new. I asked the dealer when I got it if it needed to be re-jetted and he said that it did not. The bike has 8 hours on the motor so far. I noticed this past weekend while riding to my deer hunting spot (about a half mile) that by the time I got there the pipe would be glowing red. THis was right up next to the heads and seemed to be worse on the front cylinder than the back. This happened whether I rode slow or fast. During daylight hours you could not see this. THe pipes have discolored and turned a bluish color. The question is, what is causing this, is it a problem and if so what do I need to do to correct the situation, and did this or could it have caused problems to my brand new prairie. Pipes can turn blue anyway.

I have seen glowing exhaust on a lot of different engines at night.

That said, it is also very probable that you are lean since adding a pipe usually leans it down (possibly 1 jet size). Check the plugs. If it is running lean, you will also notice coughing a lot when the engine is cold, and/or running like crap when the engine is cold.

Thanks Nyroc, It was coughing alot, and it was definately cold. What should I be checking for on the plugs? I also forgot to mention that I forgot to take the choke off the one morning before the ride and it still was glowing red. Also I was planing on adding the diamond g intake, the cdi box and maybe an aftermarket air filter, where do you think I would need to be on jetting then, actual size, as I do not know anything about jetting so I need to tell them the size when I go to get them. How hard are the jets to put in and is it something that a person with little to no carb experience can do? Thanks

Like I said the T-4 has been on since the very begining, so I cant really compare it to stock. It has lots of power though and even with the bigger tires, this thing has serious get up and go. It is loud and I will be getting the quiet core for hunting season.

Look for how light the plugs are. They should be tan, or maybe brown. If they are dark (black) it is rich. If you are lean the plugs will be white at the insulator and electrode. You check by riding for a space at 1/2 throttle and then shut the motor off instantly (don't coast to stop with it running) and then remove the front one ans check it.

Jetting really isn't that hard, just change one thing at a time annd ride it to see the diff. I have some jetting tips on my website in the tech tips area.

Dynojet gives you instructions that help you get the jetting right, plus the knowlegde on this forum will steer you right if you get confused.
