Default KFX80 Goes Toooo Sloooow

Greets,

I bought my son a 2003 KFX-80 quad for Christmas. The little 80cc engine runs great, but even at full throttle (after easing out the throttle limiter on the bar) the little thing just won't go faster than 2mph. It's as if the transmission is slipping. As the youngster goes up a slight incline, the 80 will purr up the hill at a constant RPM and eventually just stop at some point on the hill... full throttle, going nowhere, transmission slipping.

The transmission oil (80ml) level is good. Is there an adjustment for the the continuously variable transmission?

Any insight greatly appreciated. The kid wants to keep up with his big brother... or at least come close

Hi,
i have a 50cc and they are restricted to death. Pull the pipe off the head and check for a restrictor, then pull the tube between the carb and head and check there. That's where I found them on his.

There's a brass bushing on the end of the throtle cable on the carburator side. There's also a restrictor plate between the exhaust pipe and the manifold. Take these off and the thing will rip.

While you are taking the pipe and carb off to dump those pesky restrictors, you can do a quick mod to the clutch that will make it take off and climb hills a lot better. The front sheave comes apart (take the 3 screws out) and you will find 6 plastic covered roller weights. There are 2 ways you can go with this, years ago, when my son rode an LT80 (same thing, yellow plastic), I used 3 weights, put in every other slot, like a triangle, some will say use 4, 2 across from each other. I ran it for years with 3, still running that way for my buddy I sold it to. But anyway, by taking out weights, either the 3 or 4 set up, will raise the rpm's the belt is grabbed at, it will make it hill climb a lot better, after that one mod, my son's would spin the tires all the way to the top, and it makes it feel a lot snappier, and won't hurt your top end speed. If you don't want to take the cover apart right now, just wait until he's got more experience on it and wants to tackle bigger hills, then it only takes one or two hours to take it all apart and reassemble.

yeah hes right i just got my own kfx80 and i just could not beleive how slow it was. so i took off the top of the carb and found inside a restrictor sleve then it would go!!!!!!!!!!! you could also modify the air box by cutting holes in it to let more air in and get a midwest mini jet kit it comes with a jet kit a k and n air filter and power reeds!!!!try that
