JimT - the KFX 400 should be dependable, but that being said, there's piece of mind with the extended warranty. (If your dealer is willing to work with you when things happen). Negotiate a better price on the ext. warr., they have a big markup. The ext. warr. has paid for itself on my 650.

 

I got the 4 year warranty on mine for just over 400 bucks. At time of purchase. Not that I cant work on it myself, i just dont like too.
