Work? Maybe. But it isn't right to use it.
Get foam filter cleaner and foam filter oil spray cans from a motorcycle dealer. I usually use dish soap after cleaning it as much as I can with the foam filter cleaner. Rinse thoroughly. wring it out. Place filter near a fan to dry it out. Don't use any heat.
When dry spray both sides with filter oil.

the reason why i asked this is because i did go to the dealership the other day asking for some foam filter oil and the ONLY thing they had on the shelf was a couple of cans of that k&n oil. i asked them if that would work and they told YES so i paid $10 for this little bitty can of spray oil. after i left, i got reading the back of the can and it said "especially designed for gauze filters" so i turned around and went back there and got my money back and told them i just had a funny feeling about that and that i wasnt going to put that on MY filter. just thought i'd ask you guys to make sure.
is there an arrow on the belt to show which way it goes on? if so can you see it by just pulling the cover off?

The oils are very different! Foam filter oil is sticky; gauze filter oil is nothing more than ATF or power steering fluid. Don't pay the extra money for K&N oil when you can get a quart of it for about $1. You can clean your foam filter with any household degreaser like Simple Green or Formula 409.
