650 beat bad
#1
A buddy and I went for a good spring ride this afternoon. We both ride 02 p650s, his stock with 28" zillas, mine diamond g snorkel, niroc's exaust mod, red/black springs, jetting, and 27" bi/tri tires. The problem is he beats the crap out of me, what did i do wrong, where did i go wrong. Should I return to stock ( with stock bike and 26" vamps i could atleast stay with him). any help would be great.

Disme, even though you have those mods on your bike, if you don't have them all dialed in, then that is your problem. You have to get all your mods tweaked in order for them to work properly. For example, if you are 4000 feet plus, then a 142/145 jet setup is probably not your best bet. You would be better off with the 138/142 setup. Are your airscrews tweaked? Have you checked your plugs? I am currently running 142/145 jets, airbox mods, muffler mod, and snorkle. I also have 26"589s on my quad. The power is about the same as when I had my stock tires on and my quad was stock. That's not bad considering these tires are CONSIDERABLY heavier than the stockers.
So grab some wrenches and start playing!!!
P.S. Get a CDI box and don't tell your buddy. Just put it in and tell him you put some Splitfire plugs in it!!!!

I to am jetted 142/145 with .0035 washers under my needles. The bike has a slight hesitation on take off but runs great. I am on the list for the cdi. Hopefully it won't slow me down some more lol.

You can never match up 2 bikes that are the same anyways. When my bike was bone stock, I could get 96kmh out of it. I talked to other guys who could only get around 90 out of theirs. Who knows why!!!! Top speed is not my bag anyways. Holeshot is where it's at baby!!!! Being able to power wheelie this thing is where it's at! Slingin mud 30 feet in the air roostin through a mudhole------------instant wood! Tweak it out as good as you can and then just enjoy ridin!! Take care.

If you have a hesitation, you are probably not jetted right.
neither of you are clutched right, but he is clutched closer to peak HP, stock with 28", than you are with your mods.
I would guess that you are over reving because of you mods. If you have ever seem a dyno sheet, the Horse power lines go up to a point, (peak hP) at a certain RPM. After that point Horse power drops of fast, so if you have increase RPM's, you might be going by that point and actually making less Horse Power than he is. He might be making 40hp at 6300 rpm's, you might be making 38 hp at 6800 rpm's, (just a guess), when both should be making 42hp at 6500 RPM's
Also if he is better clutched than you are, he is covering more distance than you are with each turn of his tires, because they are taller.
Get or borrow a tach, see what your RPM's are wide open going down a road, this is the only way to tell.
Just my $.02, take it for what it's worth.

Disme,
Sounds like your jetting is okay, try taking off the airbox lid and take it for run. If this helps then it is not enough air getting to the carbs. Next try taking out the shims in your clutch. Oh yes you said you are useing the red spring int the front clutch. Go back to stock spring in the front you will have a smoother take off and you won't loose that 1500 rpm stall on take off. Also something to try is a 360 belt in place of the the 650 it is wider and thicker promoting better belt grabbing power. After you have tried all that you probably have heavier tires than him and you will have to go with lighter weights on your front sheaves.
You will have to do one thing at a time to diagnose where the problem originates.
