JUST HOOKED UP MY ACCELERATION MODULE..!!! HOLY %&*@#$%^&&!!!

Does anyone know what kind of long term affect these modules or CDI will have on the Prairie. My understanding was that Kawi not only detuned for safety, but also to prevent maintenance issues. As long as it took me to save up for my bike, I would hate to intstall a mod that would decrease the life cycle. Although, the type of speed you guys are talking about is hard to turn down. Does anyone know of any possible maintenance issues with installing this module or the CDI? Are there any special areas we should regularly inspect after installation?

No long term testing has been done, at least to my knowledge. From general knowledge the harder you push an engine, the more maintenance intesive the engine becomes. A 350 chevy is capable of 1000+ HP, but requires a rebuild every other run. The same engine making 200hp will run forever, less stress on all the parts. Most manufacturers over-engineer their products to create a safety buffer. I'm sure the prairie engine is capable of withstanding more power than we will be able to create, and generally need no more maintenance than a stocker. Except alltoys, he's slightly insane. If anyone is going to mod an engine to the point it fails simply from the stress of running, it will be him. And once he does I'm going to see if he'll build me the same engine -2hp.

Alltoys,
Thanks for posting. Ted told me that you had tested the keys and didn't approve so I was using this conversation with him to base my decision not to purchase one. I see your reaching the magic 100 hp mark, what a beast. LOL
Dan650,
I don't think there's been much testing done other than the fact that Dale has had his installed for a year with no adverse effects. One problem area I see might be increased belt wear due to the increase in bottom end. This is not a strong point on the bikes to begin with so maybe this might effect your decision. For me, I'll take the little less belt life in exchange for the extra punch and easy wheelies. I love it.

Originally posted by: Mr350X - Scotia, yes if the factory timing is set to around 7-8* BTDC, then the module might advance it to 11-12* BTDC.
In this case, high octane might not be nessasary.

I met someone riding a Prairie 650 at Oakey Mountain trails with a custom module installed. He said the unit gives full advance on the low end and stock advance for the rest with absolutely no effect on top speed. I rode it and it is impressive. You press the overide switch to select it or just wire it up full time. He said that he has first hand knowledge of the cdi soon to be released and that it has the same effect as this module under 10MPH and then hold on from there up to about 73MPH on a stock machine!. He would not say, but I think this guy got to test one of the first ten cdi's. He also said that the cdi maker may offer a programmable version of the module, after the release of the cdi, for those people just interested in low end gain for less than $50 if enough people want it. I will see him again either this weekend or the next.

I have not read all the posts but I would go with Stakks idea. This is an old trick we used in go cart racing.I ran WKA in the briggs class and we turned those engines 6500-7000 on the upper end and I cannot recall ever having a key failure.............only a few connecting rods

Mastrblastr,
I was thinking about hardening the shaft when I had it apart but for time and expense it is easier to put in the module. The reason the key warps or splits is because the way the motor fires almost like a Harley and for every fireing sequence there is somewhat of a recoil or back lash this back lash puts stress on the key especially when it is half its original shape.
AJ650,
For duralbility the new cdi when it comes out or the modulator either will last probably longer than the machine will. Lets go back a few years now I am dating myself LOL when motors had points/condensor ignition seeries. So long as the springs would allow for the cam to make contact on the rotor you had timeing advance and what ever was needed especially rpm. Now that we have the wonderful cdi unit the magical black box that controls everything. The government and vehicle designers can down tune without fear of anyone getting hurt. Sure they design a certain amount of safety factor so what I can remember there was no problem with letting the user go to their ability and beyond. At least we had the opportunity to do so but not now. Now we have to beg to get a computer guru to build us something that costs more monery so we can get the performance we should have had from the start.
One more thing, the modulator is worth it for the bottom end but will not come close to the new cdi unit when it comes out. For 180 CDN is way to much for a tiny little 1 inch square electricle device that can be built for $10. I think this person in Quebec or at least if that is where it is coming from is ripping people off. He is taking advantage of us ATV'ing enthusiasts. If he sells 1000 units at 180 makes them for $7 in quantity he is bringing home considerable coin. There are people out there that could make these modulators for a lot less and we all can get the benefit of a little boost.
I have taken the time to do the math on this quad and it is capable of 12,000 rpm Kawi nows this along with other stuff they are not letting the public now. If the motor was at race ready from the factory would people not buy it because it is dangerous. I beleive there would have been a sell out on the first day and the standard would be a precidence. The only dark side of this whole thing is Honda is still being sewed over their three wheelers where do people get off. If you can't handle it get off it, do we all not have a brain. We have knifes in our kitchens does this mean we can't use a knife because it maybe dangerous, come on get real.
In this country we have the right to modify what ever we please if it doesn't remain at manufactury specs so what so long as we can have fun without hurting anyone. So long as no one gets hurt why not push the envelope just don't make everyone else pay for your stupidity.
I am a little long winded tonight I have to let off some steam especially when I see government envolved in something a pencil pusher who has never been on an ATV puts sanctions on our past time. We have the most modifyable 4x4 quad on the market to date and I love every CC I can pull out of the Green Machine. Thanks for letting me vent of some steam.
