Our cheap moped engine powered quad will smoke a lt50.
BTW.... the cheap moped engine quads engines are based on the Yamaha Jog Engine and are refered to as Minerelli Style engines.

I thought the Yamaha raptor 50 would be the ultimate because it's 4-stroke, SHAFT drive (for zero maintenance),electric start. THEN.... I read a topic on this site on these and there are 3-4 pages (at least) of posts about the lack of speed. Basically, it seems great for the first day or two, and then it's too gutless. The e-ton 50 is also supposed to be pretty good and it's got a horn, lights and electric start. Nothing wrong with the LT50 and fastfreddy made a couple of good points about the dealer.the eton may be cheaper.

The LTA50 is based very heavily on the JR50 dirtbike. On the old LT50, the top-end was the same, while the newer one has a larger wrist pin for more strength. The bottom end is different, but both are very simple.
I bought my son a LTA50 for his 3rd birthday. He's now ridden it for 2 1/2 years and is outgrowing it's performance. I've ported it and bored it out, but it's still too slow for the steep hills that surround us, and improperly suspended for the jumps he's wanting to take. That's not a slam against the lil Zuki; most folks would not have these issues. In my opinion the LTA50 is probably the best rank beginner quad out there for kids in the 3-6 year range. Lightweight, easy to slow it down to match the child, easy access to parts, great resale value, and a chassis that properly fits little kids.
So even though I've made some great mods to my son's motor and chassis, I'm presented with a choice: Pour money into making a non-performance quad into a performance one, or sell it. It's for sale.

when my son turned 4 we got him a used Honda TRX 70. We put it in 2 nd gear with the throttle screw in,told him this bike is going to go wherever it want to, you go where you want to. When he wanted to change gears, he would look at me and i would give him thumbs up to shift and thumbs down to downshift. It did not take long for him to get the hang of it. hes 10 now and i have just bought the bike back from the 3rd owners. If its your kids first bike go with something simple like a cvt trans oil injection and maybe electric start dont know if there are any 50s out there with electric start.Polaris 50s and 70s are good starter bikes. Have you tried looking for a 70 with some suspension your kid might outgrow the 50 in a year. I hope my 2 cents can help
