Need help with an LT80
#1
I have an 87 LT80 that I bought from a guy that said he couldn't get it started. I checked and the compression was very low. So, I rebuilt the top end. Cylinder bored 30 over, new Wiseco piston. I then took the carb apart, soaked it overnight and cleaned it good and blew out all the passages.
Now, I can get the bike to start but only if I hold the throttle wide open and spray starting fluid in it. Then the only way it will stay running is if I keep revving it. Otherwise, when it starts to drop down to an idle, it just dies. Then once again it will not start without starting fluid and wide open throttle.
Now, I do not have any of the airbox on it nor do I have a battery in it. I am just using the pull starter.
If anyone has any ideas on my problem, I would appreciate the help.
Thanks
Rob

Well, I guess I'd take the carb back off and re-clean.This time remove both jets and clean/blow thru. Also remove the brass piece that the float needle sits in and see if that may be plugged.I would also remove the choke and clean that area.
Hows the spark? I've seen dirty/rusty fly wheels/stators do this.Altho it does sound like a choke circiut problem.
FYI: Pistons come in stock (50mm) and 20/40/60/80 over.
Please use WD-40 (aerosol) instead of starting fluid. Try using two fingers in front of the carb to hand choke it.
It may save time while you have the carb off again to remove the reed cage and check the reeds for cracks.
We'll go from there. Please keep us informed

Thanks for the advise. I'll pull the carb off again and tear into it.
The reeds looked fine.
Seems to have a good spark, but I will double check.
And, not to beat a dead horse, but you can get a 30 over piston. Wiseco #673M05075. That is a 50.75MM piston which is 30 over stock.
I'll keep you posted.

OK, I stand corrected.
The reason for my error here is that I will not use a Weisco piston when there are stock Zuki pistons available in the size needed. Thus I've never had to go to the inbetween size of .030.
No dead horse here, this is how we all learn! Thanks for the info.
