Default Minimum Maintenance Checklist....

I read a recent post and it reminded me of some info I had in my archives. The below is a good list to use after you bring your new mini home from the dealer &/or used before every major trail ride / race. Great list to keep in your archives if you provide a new mini to your "young rider" for Christmas.

* Sorry, I can't remember the original author. If you are the author, many of us thank you.

--------------------------

First Time Riders – Initial Inspection / Adjustment Checklist.

Fresh from the dealer:

1. Check and adjust the tire pressure.
2. Check and adjust chain tension.
3. Check that the rear valve stems are facing outwards.
4. Pull the rubber hub caps off and verify cotter keys are in. All wheels.
5. Pull air box cover and verify the air filter has been serviced and oiled.
6. Apply thread lock tight on almost every bolt.
7. Inspect cable routing.
8. Make sure engine RPM's don't increase as handle bars are turned.
9. Adjust front brake lever/cable to where it works best for the rider.
10. Verify tether & kill switches working properly.
11. Make sure it smokes, this tells you the oil injection system is working.
12. Check fuel, and oil tank levels.
13. Grease A-Arms, Chain tensioners, Swing Arms, etc.
14. Check CVT transmisison fluid for proper fluid level.
15. Check battery for proper fluid level.
16. Apply dielectric grease in every electrical plug and light bulb socket.
-------
17. Ride it first yourself and verify all controls.
18. Go over all controls with Rider.
19. All Personal Protective Equipment should be worn before riding.
20. Apply all of these responses and common sense and your riding!

I would purchase another spark plug and chain lube. Read the owners manual on chain adjustment - this will be almost the first thing you have to do, mechanically.

------------

If there's other things you recommend, please add to this post.

thanks.

Great list spike99, About all I can think to add at the moment is to check how chain masterlink clip is installed. You need to make sure that the closed end of the clip is facing the direction of rotation. In other word's, it need's to be positioned so that if it strikes something while your riding, it is knocked on and not off. I only say this because the one on my wifes quad was installed wrong from the factory.

A caveat could be added depending on 2 stroke versus 4 stroke on a couple. and chain versus shaft drive...

If it has been sitting for a while, they may want to dump the old fuel and replace with fresh gas. I'd be checking for mice nests and other critters as well... general leaks etc.

In the upper level machines.. you might add check coolant.
