Polaris 90cc to charge or not to charge?
#1
Newbie to this forum and need some help. I have called all the Polaris dealers in Phoenix and have been unimpressed by their lack of knowledge..... My son's 2001 Polaris Sportsman 90 doesn't seem to be charging at an idle it is in the 10.5-11.5 V range does anyone know how many APMs this thing should be putting out? Also I would like to put some type of head lights on this thing as he is now old enough to ride with dad at night and it only came with a tail light.
Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome,
there are a lot of guys here that can prob answer you question about the amps, but as far as the lights go, check this thread out, there are several other threads out there
about putting lights on mini quads...
My daughter has a 03 sportsman 90 and I'm in the process of adding lights to it..
I found 2 types driving lights at O'Reilly Auto parts that said they and 35 w bulbs in them but only one had the H3-35w Bulbs the other was a 55w bulb.. . I had to open the box and open the light to verify the bulb..
I'm gonna be using only 1 of the driving lights mounted some how and I found a couple 12v LED lights that I'm gonna stick in the tail light and wire up to the driving lights to come on also...
hope that helps you

Thanks Guys! The link on the lights is great, I will definitely set up his Quad like this as soon as I tackle the issue of only 10.5V at the battery. I think I'll try to rectify the rectifier.... LOL.

Partz, I am no electrical wizard, but I wonder if it is supposed to put put out much at idle. Have you checked it at higher rpm? I read some where that you should check out put at 3k rpm, that was on a street m/c though. A guy was wondering if he had enough power to run 2 electric suits. The suggestion was to hook up every thing, fire up bike, run it at 3k rpm and check for minimum 13 volts at battery.

At idle your bike will not charge the battery. Like mywifesquad said you need to rev it up to get an accurate reading. If you notice on most bikes the lights dim when the bike is idling and get brighter when you rev it-that is why. You should have no problems running lights as I am going to do the same for my sons 90 pred.

Did you ever get your electrical output inquire resolved?
If your SP-90 is the same as our SP-90, you can use a "Digital Ohms Meter" to verify your Stator Ohms resistance are within normal operating range. For a simple picture, surf: - Press Here -
For lots of other stator info, surf:
- Press Here 1 -
- Press Here 2 -
- Press Here 3 -
Note: While looking at these pictures, think about how much water / mud you may have driven your Polaris mini in. Perhaps it's time to pull the many layers off your stator and give it a good cleaning. For us, we now need to clean behind our Polaris stator area every 6 months -> 1 year.
Hope this helps....

Partz:
I just bought (three rides and 3 weeks ago) a SP 90 and am having problems already with the battery. It's dead and doesn't charge with a ride. It's an '04 and I believe it sat too long on the showroom floor and the batter is toast. My son is learning to ride it and rarely has it, if ever, full throttle and it won't/didn't charge the battery. Probably because it was dead. Also, I have hand warmers on my 335 SP and they don't work well at idle, so that tells me that they need amperage.
Regarding the lights, you may want to check this site out to see if they are a possibiliy to use:

I've been thinking of purchasing these as they would mount where the two are in the grill of the SP 90.
Hope this doesn't violate any rules. Delete if it does and PM so I know.

What ever you do you don't want to exceed about a 35 watt bulb. The alternator in these things can't support much more than that.
