Bad reeds on ac 90
Bad reeds,......Very hard starting. Usually you'll think the C.D.I. box is going bad. Because they will run intermitently bad and jetting doesn't effect it. And you'll have spark.
When they go completely bad all at once they give one large POP! Very similar to a backfire sound.
If they go bad when the engine is not underwater!
Why do you ask?

Cracked or improperly sealed reed leafs can also "spit back" mixed fuel from the crank case and into carb. Re: Reverse air flow. Thus, might get small amounts of gas in the bottom of the air filter box. And yes, loss of power. Especially when a young rider needs the extra power to crawl out of mud hole or up a steep hill. When a leaf blows, it will "poop" much like a back fire. Then, the 2 stroke engine won't run - even with excellent compression with solid spark. As far as I know, the only way to check the reed leafs (for cracks, solid seal, etc.) is to visually inspect them.
Hope this helps....
