Just what ATV did I buy?
I have been told twice while responding to messages that a Yamoto 50 does not have 4 speeds, that it is an automatic. O.K. I bought the XL 50 from Raceway which is a 4 speed semi automatic for my son. I was told they sold 2 brands Yamoto and Kazuma and that the XL was a Yamoto. Did I get it all wrong? What exactly did I buy?

Hey im in the same boat with you i ordered mine last friday. I am a little confused, is it a brand spanking new yamoto or a discontinued version. The Yamoto site has nothing like the Xl on it anywhere. Maybe someone could clarify.

I will try and clarify some of this for you.. Basically the only difference between the Yamoto and Kazuma is maybe the stickers that are placed on them. Aside from that they are vertually the same. Basically there's only 2 models for the small 50cc atv's and that's the KMX-50 and the XL-50 (naming from raceways site). They are just about theexact same except for the style of plastics. For the price that they sell shipped to your door is actually really good, considering they back up their warantee, from what I read anyhow.
As for the Transmission is considered, they are all semi-auto's. You can use the clymer's 50-110cc Honda book for refferance to the engine. There might be semi 3 speed versions, but that's usally the leave the shifer fork out for the 4th gear. As for the automatic, well there's no real automatic for these atvs, just CVT and semi. I have only seen the CVT version on the 150cc models. The honda engine was never designed for the CVT as it was never used on a scooter.
Thereoy has it that you can leave the atv in a higher gear (say 2nd or 3rd) and drive around to the max speed of that gear and it will act as an automatic, but it will have slow initial take-off. There's a ide of a 3yo kid doing this on www.badazztoyz.com web site, I belive it was in the forums there. I have read your previous post about the chain jumping if you leave it in a high gear, but as far as I know, this shouldn't be the problem.

KYATVGUY,
Thanks for the link. However, if you look really close to the left side of the engine you will notice that this is not a CVT style transmission. Yes, there is no gear shifter either, but if you know about semi-auto transmissions, you can leave them in a high gear and it will take off from a stand still.
Therefore, the atv that the lady boght is not a Yamato, but is not an automatic or CVT stylae transmission, it is a single speed 3rd or 4th gear only set up. It's actually a good idea, but you would have more power actually shifting the gears.

The XL50 on Raceway looks nothing like a Yamoto 50.
