Default Giovanni Valve Specs

Hi,

I've read all the threads related to the Giovanni 50cc quad. There appears to be a discrepancy out there regarding the valve specs. The on-line Giovanni manual says .002 for both the intake and exhaust. I have obtained a shop manual for the Honda Z50R which also states .002 for both the intake and exhaust. The threads however are giving specs of .006 for intake and .008 for exhaust.

Does anyone know where these specs originated from? If anyone has set their valves to .006 and .008.....how is the performance? I plan on checking the valves in a few days (20 hours is almost up).

PS: The GIO is running great....absolutlely no problems with it.

HI Brian,

Had two good days of riding after i did my valves Fridaynight (.oo6 and .008). Seems to have lot more power. But valves are really noisey. I should have taken the valve measurement before i changed them. Not sure if the valve adjustment had anything to do with bike running lean after adjusting to the new specs. I had to move needle valve down 2 notches.

Seems to be faster, just alot more valve noise. Not sure if i like the noise.

I guess I'll wait and see, J.R.

I posted .006 / 008 for the valve setting every time we've set the valves to .002 / .003 the motor has packed up and quit after 20 minutes of riding, an old Honda mechanic pulled the book on the Honda 70 and 50 series of motors from the 1960 / 70 trail mini bikes and we started working from those specs.
.002 / .003 is to tight. If its that noisy try .004/ .006 intake / exaust and see if that is more satisfactory for noise, but .002 is to tight if your running hot, and you will wipe the valves out.

HI Oldkawi,

Like i said valve specs gave bike lots more power, just a little more noisey. You could never hear the valve chatter before. You said if valves too tight the valves will burn up. What will happen if to loose ? I don't know enough about bikes, that seems to be the problem. Maybe i will run it down to Honda and see if its too noisey or not. Then try the new specs out.

I did learn something thru all this, I should have measured valves before i started. I just tried .006 and .008 guages and they didn't fit. So away i went and adjusted them. Thanks for all your help. see ya J.R.

I'd take em down to .004 / .006 if its real noisy you could end up with excessive tip wear on the rocker if its to loose and carbon build up on the exaust port, I'm kinda suprised at all the "issues" popping up with the Gio. I've now done 8 of them the early ones were a little different than the new ones, a little rougher and needed a little more "tweeking" the new ones right from the crate are a 2 hour prep then ride machine the high hour machine from last summer has just over 250 hours on it and had its first valve adjustment-- its .004/.006 it was .007/.008 the 3rd through 6th unit we've done are at .006 / .008 the 7th I miced last night is at .003 /.005 the 8th is going to be checked this weekend. The first and second don't count anymore they have been completely redone with
A) a Lifan 90cc and B) a 125 Lifan horizontal these both took a huge amount of work to convert and I'm not doing it ever again, I'll go find broken TRX Honda's to do the work to for kids who need bigger power in smaller machines
both the "shelf engines" for the Gios were miced at .006/007 and 007/007

Hey Guys,

Great feedback...... Darrel, you seem to very knowledgable and it is very much appreciated. I would have to say that my GIO has no issues... it is a great little quad that goes like a hot damn. I just wanted to make sure that my valves were not too tight. I checked them (valves) tonight after twenty hours and they were at .003/.004. I set them to .006 and .008 which appears to be a bit much....plenty of valve noise. I think I will set them at .004 and .006 and be done with it.

Of Note, There does appear to be two different engines out there. Although they look identical ones takes a 10mm plug (CR7HSA) while the other takes a 14mm plug (BR7HS). I purchased my Quad two weeks ago and it has a manufacturer's date of March 2006 on it and my quad takes the 10mm (CR7HSA) plug. My quad did not come with a remote or an alarm as advertised.

I am very close to purchasing the GIO 150cc CVT transmission Quad. Do you know of anyone that has one? If so, any feedback?

Talk to you soon.

Brian

Hey Guys,

Thanks Darrel your knowledge is very much appeciated. I'd be lost with out the information. I will reset my valves this weekend to .004 and .006. Brian both my quads 10 mm plugs. One made in April and other one in Jan , also no remotes or alarm. I don't believe the ones i look at on Ebay or the 2 i got from Ebay have ever stated a remote or alarm. I know some people in previous threads here have mentioned having them.

Brian did yours come from ebay ? Just wondering where you saw the advertisement for remote and alarm. Would you let me know how .004 and .006 work out for your valves if you do them before the weekend.

Thanks guys, J.R.

WOW, I had no idea you had your quads that long Darrel. Did you get them from John in Vancouver ? I just set my valves to .004 and .006. Sounds much better, low sounding tic at idle and performance seems to be the same as bigger gap. Thanks again for all the information.

Do you have yours insured and registered? Insurance was fairly easy as soon as i sent them the ebay listing. They needed to see that it held 300 lbs . At 50cc they didn't believe that i could ride it and was probably insuring it for a child to ride. Registry was a whole other story took 2 weeks and many phone calls to get plates. Thanks again for your knowledge and passing it on to us Darrel. Off for a ride, see ya

J.R.

Yes, I got the GIO from John at All Star Salez.

I too set the valves at .004 and .006.....still a little noisy, but better than burning them out with the tighter setting.

I'll keep you posted on how the quad holds up. Of note, my daughter is 90 pounds and drives this thing like she stole it....full throttle and hang on. I'll be ordering the 150cc very shorlty and selling this one locally. Many people are interested in buying it from me.
