Rev Limiter bypass/fix for 2006 Suzuki ATV 50
I just bought a 2006 Suzuki ATV 50cc (4 stroke) for my son. When we first rode it I thought the choke was stuck because it ran so poorly. Before you even get close to reving it up the bike starts to sputter. I've taken it back to the dealer and according to them it's the rev limiter. We all agree that its kicking in way to soon but so far they have not figured out how to correct the problem easily.
In this forum I've seen that people have changed out the CDI on the Yamaha ATV 50 with good results and I would like to know if anyone has a fix for the new Suzuki ATV 50?
Any help would be appreciated.

Help! I have the exact same issue on a brand new LT-Z50. It cannot even move over my foot, it lacks power and is running extremely poor. Thought it was just really rich, took it in, and they did the clutch restrictor removal. Supposedly they retuned it, but there is not enough power for it to move my five year old up a driveway. Any suggestions or quick checks? there is no blockage of the air filter inlet.
Thanks. This can't be right. John

I assume you removed the screw from the throttle area to allow full throttle operation. I removed the extra air filter cover and that seemed to help. You will still have sputter at higher revs (rpm limiter and no aftermarket help yet) but the thing should go up your driveway. If it doesn't I suspect something else is wrong.
I'm going to sell mine and buy a honda as soon as my son is big enough. I live in CA and they slapped a red sticker on this bike so it's useless in the summer months anyway.

Dunehauler,
Mike is correct... There is no replacement CDI or bypass as of yet for this bike... About all you can do is remove the sleeve from the CVT adjust the throttle to max and open up the airbox a bit (If you do the airbox you will need to adjust the carb, I'm still tickering with that.) And once you do all of that you will still be lucky if you can get the bike to 15MPH...
I may call VDI and see if they have any suggestions.... (They are the only folks I haven't called...)
Good Luck,
Hibrass

This thread makes me glad I purchased a gently used 2002 version of this quad for my son. It's has the 2-stroke engine and, with just the cylinder exhaust restrictor removed, has plenty of power to climb hills including some ~25 degree slopes near our lake place. It also easily hits 15 MPH on firm trails and would probably go faster if we didn't always make sure he was **following** either Mommy's or Daddy's quad [grin]. This is with the throttle limited to perhaps 1/3rd of its travel.
Meanwhile, I still have the intake restrictor, the carb slide restrictor, and the throttle screw restrictor in place. Those will be removed, one by one, as he gets older and more competent. There's plenty of growth left in this quad for him, and plenty of untapped juice in that engine. Newer, and 4-stroke, isn't always better.
Good luck with this quad... I'll be watching this thread because someday he'll need to bump up to a new model and I may not be able to find a 2-stroke by then!

More thinking about this....
You said the dealer blames "the rev limiter". Precisely WHAT is the "rev limiter" on this quad? Do they really, actually have an RPM sensor that feeds back to the throttle? Or is it just the usual mechanical restrictions like throttle screws, intake and exhaust restrictions, etc.?
This makes a big difference because if it's actually a true, RPM-based rev limiter then there's got to be some electronics somewhere that need adjustment or replacement. If it's just a mechanical restriction then it could be a mistuned carb, for example (running too rich based on the restrictions that are in place).

OK, so you're saying it really IS based on RPM's instead of just another mechanical restrictor of some kind. In that case, I agree that this rev limiter may be the problem. I wonder if the manual describes how to defeat/disconnect the limiter as the rider gains experience. If so, that's the first test I'd try.

WAATV,
I'm still waiting for a shop manual... Once I get one I hope to be able to see if there is somekind of Voltage signal that we maybe able to bypass. But at this time no ones really knows, other than it is controlled by the CDI itself.
More later! I hope!
