ok, got a deal on two atv's, both need some work, I will be retighening all bolts, I was told the chain comes off them when they are ridden, what oil should I use in the engine, where do you get batts for them? also they have the remote start/kill thing, how can I disable this feature as I was lead to believe that it drains the batt. what sprocket can I put on the back to make it larger/ take off quicker, pls let me know a year/make of sprocket to buy, also any other info on this atv would be great, got both of them for 350, one needs the frame welded, both need all bolts tightened, both need batts, oh and she gave me two helmets too! I did just spend 45 worth of gas to get them home though, just pulled in the driveway! any advice would be appriciated, any at all! from what parts interchange to what I need to use for oil in the engine to change it and how much it takes to fill it up, thanks in advance.

 

I would not only retighten but, locktight to. these bikes have problems with the chain falling off, is it falling off because the tensioner comes loose or is it because the swing arm is not straight. I would use 10-30 motor oil in them nothing fancy, no need to pay more for the oil then the bike. does the battery have a # on it if so you can probably find one online, alot of guys try walmart or your local battery guy take battery with you so you can match it up. kill switches don't kill batteries usually the bats. already bad if you leave the bat. hooked up you will have to charge it once in awhile if you don't run all the time. on the switch it depends on whether it's an open or closed system usaully you can just conect two wire's behind switch. as for the sprocket look up sprocket specialist and send them your sprocket and whether you want bigger or smaller. it may not be the sprocket though it could be the clutch or the belt. smaller sproc. gets slower take off but, higher speeds bigger sprocket gets faster take off but, lower top speed you can tell what year it is by looking at the 10 # in the vin. if they were mine I would try to make 2 into one if you can't find parts. I would get one running then work on the other.

 

sorry didn't notice you said remote kill switch. usaully there is a box you can disconect look for a little alarm like box with a little antenea wire on it, and yeah they do drain the battery if you let them sit.

thanks for the info, I plan on making one run, then the other, they both start with charger attached, as for the sprocket, I was wondering if anyone already had a part number or know someone to buy one from, was thinking about getting a smaller front one instead of a bigger back one.

 

Dealseeker, if you have a decent sized dealership or cycle shop nearby, I would take the sprockets and chain in with you and see if they can match it up. At the least, they should be able to tell you what guage it is, and you can go from there. Radrobb has given you some great startup advice, sounds like a busy weekend for you!

when you change front sprocket it goes in big jumps back sprocket takes little jumps in speed

if you change front you will probably have to change both to get it right if you do the rear you can get away with just changing one.

Dealseaker,

My son has a Sunl SLA-50; I have been told and found that the rear LED brake light is the cause of the battery drain not the remote kill. When you start the bike using the starter switch you have to engage the brake lever on the left handle bar. This also engages the rear led brake light, while the starter is engaged. I have check the amp draw and found that if the bike does not start fairly quickly it will kill the battery... I would recommend either disconnecting the rear brake light. (My last choice) Use the remote start key fob if your bikes came with them. (My 1st choice) Or, last rig up a brake light disconnect switch, which you disengage while starting and reengage once the bike is running.

I use the remote start key fob when starting his bike. Works great. Now if I could just get him to remember turn off the red kill switch once he's finished riding. He'll leave it on and kill the battery.

As far as the chain goes there have been several threads about bracing the front of the engine. I agree with these threads. The engine when under load really moves around which causes a lot of slack in the chain... My son’s bike chain has been upgraded with a high quality chain. But, it still moves around a lot. I have been looking into fabricating ridged engine mounts.

thanks for all the advice, I will be working on the one on Monday (work this weekend), I'm not going hill climbing, lol, just want my son to ride slow! The other one will probably sit in the shed for a while, until I get the one up and going the right way, as for the sprocket, I was just wondering if anyone knew of a year/make/model of an atv/bike that would work, instead of trying to match one up, thanks for the advice again.

 

anytime your welcome I personally wouldn'tmess with the sprocket its easier and cheaper to use the throtle limiter its a little screw next to the thumb throtle you probably will need to put a longer screw in there to limit it more thats what I did when my kids first started you need to teach them how to control the throttle and not hold it wide open it doesn't take to long
