2005 ETON 90 Problem-please help son bumed!
#1
A few weeks ago my son pulled his 90 viper out and could not get it started, it was in N with the brake squeezed and switch ON, and would crank but not start! I then noticed the N light was flashing and decided to let it sit for a few minutes with power off, and then attempted to start it and it fired right up!
Then, last night my son pulled it out again to ride, and all it does is flash! When I turn the key I can hear the CDI box click and then a few seconds later it clicks again and starts flashing the gear indicator and won't fire up! I sprayed WD40 on several connectors including the three wires going to the tranny with no success. Please..... Anyone have a clue on what could be going on?
Thanks in advance,
-Chris

There must be a sensor/switch on the shifting mechanism. Sounds like that may be loosing contact when in N. Could just be a loost bolt or 2.
That's where I'd start anyways.

Sounds like the sensor that tells the CDI box that the quad is in what gear has gone bad. Or it could be the electronic gear change peice. They may be the same peice on those quads. I almost bought that 90r for my wife, I just couldnt trust the electronic gear change unit. Its not a new technology, but it is on a quad..

Ok turn the key on and shift the motor if you cant hear the motor shifting then it' your shift motor if you can then it's more than likely your cdi box if it's the motor it's out of time.

Well,
I E-mailed E-ton's Tech department and they replied stating it needs to be reset, that the electronic shifter is out of alignment.
Procedure:
Turn key on, slide the selector switch to reverse and wait 3 seconds, then to forward for 3 seconds, and then back to natural for 3 seconds, turn key off for 30 seconds to reset.
I haven't tried it yet due to being at work, but makes since to me because my son had left it in the forward position when he parked it last.
I hope this works-
Thanks for all the replies!

Well I attempted the tranny retiming procedure with no success! So maybe the gear selector is bad. I guess I'll try pulling it off and see if I could bench test it.
It?s very frustrating when you buy a $2000 toy, run one tank of gas through it, and then it breaks on you!
Don?t get me wrong?. I like that little quad, my luck (or lack 0f) just sucks sometimes!

I just went thru the crap (2005 90R). The flashing lights indicate that the tranny and gear selector switch are not in sync. I replaced the cdi and it worked okay for a day or so then back to crap. I didn't do anything with for a month or so then remembered reading about the wd-40 thing. I disconnected all wires from the cdi and other places, sprayed with wd and have had no problem. I did put the old cdi back on and it was bad. Don't know what caused that. This all started after about 20 hours of service.
